Photographic Exhibition by Stephen Taylor @ Lauderdale House
Feb 1 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

An exhibition of photographs by Stephen Taylor on the theme of cycling to the end of the road.

Stephen is a cyclist as well as a photographer. For this project he combined his interests to explore the route from London, a busy city, eastward through the hinterland of the suburbs, out into the Essex countryside and finally to where the road turns into a gravel track and then ends at St Peter’s Chapel, Bradwell on Sea, on the edge of the sea.

“As a cyclist I have always been fascinated by roads. I have been attracted to their potential – where they start and where they could take me – so I thought I would use my photography to explore this journey. I have lived in London for many years and very early on I learned how to escape, to find the roads out through the suburbs where eventually the housing would fall away, and fields and woodland would take their place. Then I became interested in the idea of continuing as far as the road could take me – until it petered out and became no more.”

Stephen is a self-taught photographer. He uses it to explore, understand and relate to the world around him. His photographs have appeared at the Lauderdale House annual photographic exhibition as well as the RPS London Region members’ exhibition. He has also had a one-person exhibition in 2017 in Weymouth, Dorset on the old tramway that used to run through the center of the town.

Annual Kyffin Williams Lecture at Highgate School @ Highgate School Museum
Feb 3 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The 12th Annual Kyffin Williams lecture will take place in the Highgate School Museum on Southwood Lane at 7 pm on Monday the 3rd of February 2020.  It will be delivered by Oliver Fairclough, former Keeper of Art at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, and his title will be: ‘Room for Welsh Art?: Kyffin Williams and the National Museum of Wales’

Sir Kyffin Williams RA taught art at Highgate from 1944-73 before retiring to Anglesey, the place of his birth, to paint full-time.  He is remembered now as one of Wales’s best-loved artists.  The talk will introduce the collections at the National Museum of Wales, including the invaluable contributions of the Davies sisters, and go on to explore the question as to whether the institution is a museum of Welsh art, or a gallery of Western European art located in Wales.  It will also describe how Kyffin, a generous benefactor of the museum, was outspoken in his belief that the NMW should present a canon of Welsh ‘greats’ at a time (the 1980s) when the whole concept of national schools was increasingly suspect, and contemporary art in Wales was taking off in directions he found incomprehensible.

Oliver Fairclough is an Honorary Research Fellow at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Cardiff, where he worked from 1986, becoming Keeper of Art in 1998 until his retirement in 2015.  Previously he had held museum posts in Liverpool and Birmingham.  He led the redevelopment of the art galleries at the National Museum to create the National Museum of Art for Wales between 2007 and 2011.  His research interests include art collections and artists in Wales from the 16th century to the mid-20th century.  He lives in the Brecon Beacons.

NOT GREEN @ LUX
Feb 13 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Ghost Gum Tree by Richard Layzell.

How do we experience the concept of public land when we can hardly see it?
What happens to a place of leisure when the users are gone?

This is a rare chance to experience Waterlow Park after dark and when the gates are locked, dog- and people-free. Numbers strictly limited.

LUX’s Creative Ecologist Richard Layzell will lead a small group on a guided walk through the park, describing a series of local and global ecological and anecdotal experiences. Expect live demonstrations, shared knowledge, intermissions and surprises. Amongst other things, Layzell will introduce his collaborator, Kino Paxton, the sound of Mardalsfossen (one of Norway’s largest waterfalls), the marshy ground at the foot of the hill, the horrors of grass, Levelling as a guerrilla activity, ash ‘growback’ and the legacy of Andrew Marvell.

The 30min night walk concludes with hot soup in the Conservatory of the LUX. Please wear warm clothes and be prepared for rain, hail or snow. Richard would like to acknowledge the Aboriginal tour guides of Sydney, Alice Springs and Melbourne Botanical Gardens as an inspiration for this work.

Printmakers Council: TIME

The Printmakers Council invites you to find the time to join them in exploring the concept of Time in both traditional and innovative forms printmaking. Determined historically by the rising and the setting of the sun, our modern lifestyles push against the natural rhythms of rest and labour and our now 24-hour economy urges consumer purchasing of smart watches.  It’s not just telling the time but scheduling what to do with it.  Meanwhile astrophysical research challenges our understanding of time itself.  The Printmakers explore our complex relationship with time, a fascinating and engrossing subject for us all.

All work is for sale.
