Bess – The Other Houdini @ Upstairs at the Gatehouse
Oct 31 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Escape Artists Theatre Company presents
Bess – The Other Houdini

The startling true story of Harry Houdini’s beloved wife and her breakdown in the aftermath of his death. The world knew Bess as Houdini’s loyal partner, both on and off stage, his inspiration, his guiding star – Or was their perfect marriage their greatest illusion?

It is 1929, the height of the Spiritualist frenzy. Houdini, the world’s first Superstar, has been dead two years and all attempts to contact him have failed. Yet surely if anyone can break through from the Other Side, it’s Harry.

Meanwhile his widow, Bess, his beloved partner both offstage and on, is alone and lost, her fragile health already stretched thin by years of living in daily fear as her husband was buried alive, flung manacled into icy rivers and dangled upside down ten stories high in a strait jacket. Now she is deeply in debt, struggling with addiction and desperate to stay in the public eye.

When she is accused of rigging a séance, and with the press hounding her as a fraud, she is forced to flee to a private sanitarium. Does she truly believe her husband has reached out to her from the Beyond? Or, haunted as she is by her own memories and hallucinations, can she even tell the difference? Her doctor is up-to-date with the latest treatments but neither he, nor her celebrity-obsessed nurse, nor her hovering family, can make the slightest dent in her despair.

As she battles with her own demons, she stumbles upon devastating clues about Houdini’s secret life, leading to the revelation that their perfect marriage may have been the greatest illusion of them all. But if everything she built her life upon was only for show, how will she be able to survive Life after Harry?

Watercolour Group Exhibition @ Lauderdale House
Oct 31 @ 8:44 pm – 9:44 pm

The Highgate Watercolour Group look forward to welcoming their visitors, both local and from further afield, and take great pleasure in presenting their work in this beautiful historic house.

This year they will have the cream of their output on display, beautifully framed and reasonably priced.  Nearly all members are represented, so there is great variety and hopefully something for everyone.

In August, the Highgate Watercolour Group painting activities moved out of 10A South Grove, where they usually work, enabling them to exploit the city more widely. Look out for paintings of Omved Gardens in Highgate, views of Hampstead and the Heath, as well as other north London hotspots. And of course one of their favourite venues is Waterlow Park and Lauderdale House itself.

Everyone is welcome to the private view on Wednesday 11th October from 7.30 pm to 9.30pm – come meet the artists and see the work first!

The gallery is generally open:

  • Monday – Tuesday : 12pm to 4pm
  • Wednesday : 11am to 3pm
  • Thursday – Sunday : 12pm to 4pm

Please note that the gallery hours may change or the gallery may close at short notice due to private events. To avoid disappointment, please check our most up-to-date opening hours by clicking here or calling us on 020 8348 8716 the day before your visit.

Highgate Musical Theatre Choir @ Jackson’s Lane Arts Centre
Nov 2 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Come and join our Musical Theatre Choir! A fun, low pressured choir focusing on songs from musicals, and older pop songs. We rehearse on Thursday evenings, 8-9.30pm at Jackson’s Lane, opposite Highgate tube station.

Throughout the year, we will cover repertoire from Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, to Les Mis, to Sondheim, to West Side Story, to Wicked, and everything in between. Older pop songs will include songs by the Carpenters, the Beatles, and many more. This term, we will also be looking at some Christmas songs.

Any standard welcome, and no need to read music as the songs will be taught line by line. The choir is run by Rachel Dussek, a singer, singing teacher, and choir leader who trained in classical singing and then in musical theatre at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Please get in touch by email or phone to book a taster session.

Highgate Musical Theatre Choir @ Jackson’s Lane Arts Centre
Nov 9 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Nov 10 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

The evening event will be raising money for InspireUK – The Charity, a small charity which offers low-cost and accessible therapy for those who need it, with a particular focus on marginalised communities.
