A wonderful way to break up the working day, our lunchtime concerts offer 45 minutes of gorgeous classical music performed live in the elegant and historic setting of our Long Gallery.
Each lunchtime concert runs from 1.15pm to 2pm, and is free and open to all. There is no ticket required – simply turn up and take a seat. Doors will open at 1pm.

After a successful summer term at Highgate Library we are continuing running weekly after school yoga classes for children (4-9 yrs) at Jacksons Lane in the Autumn Term. There will be max. 15 places and 14 sessions, starting Tuesday 3rd September.
Classes consist of a gentle warm up, breathing exercises, a series of sun salutations and story based yoga poses and flow, including partner / group poses, yoga / mindfulness games (or arts & crafts) plus relaxation. Don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information. Drop-in pending availability.

Our children’s art classes run on a termly basis, providing children aged 5-11 with an introduction to the basics of drawing and painting. Each week children will build on their skills learnt in previous weeks, developing their confidence and ability, with the help of our supportive and friendly teachers.

In this group show, Samantha Laub, Jason Sweidan and David Taylor present vibrant abstract paintings, influenced by abstract expressionism. The paintings demonstrate distinctive emotional responses to the natural.
Samantha, Jason and David have been developing a set of unique styles in close interaction with each other – all with strong colour use. The theme of present and remembered emotion displays their distinctive styles whilst drawing on a common theme.
Samantha’s works begin as spontaneous outpouring of energy and emotion that she then develops and refines into finished pieces. Her paintings are visceral, full of movement and texture.
Jason applies oil on canvases to construct and deconstruct images that reflect elements of nature. His paintings are predominantly fluid, physical and textured using gravity to allow the paint to evolve.
David’s work reflects memories of the natural in which strong colour use is combined with loose natural references that evoke a sense of fluidity, water or landscape.
All three artists are local to the exhibition and originally met at the Hampstead School of Art (HSOA).
Samantha is Creative Director of Gorgeous Brewery based in Highgate and also works in advertising, as well as being a painter. She has exhibited at a number of HSOA exhibitions and was also shortlisted in the National Open Art exhibition in 2016.
Jason works in investor relations as well as being an artist. He recently held his first solo art exhibition and has exhibited at several HSOA summer exhibitions and the Green and Stone summer exhibition 2019. His work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, Spain and Bermuda.
David is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Professor Emeritus at the University of Brighton. He is a leading academic social theorist and writer as well as a painter and sociologist of art.

Join Adventuretellers Brooke Conway and Hannah Mathieson on a story-quest to save the golden dragon and her newly laid eggs from the grasps of a lonely wizard. Together you will conquer fears and face mystical characters, travelling through jungles, enchanted forests, lagoons and snow storms ‘til you reach the wizard’s ruined tower in the snowy mountains. Can you save the dragon, or will we be trapped in an eternal winter forever?

The Stolen Dragon will take place at 10.30am on Saturday 9 November. Performances last approximately 45 minutes and are suitable for children aged 3+ and their families.
There will be a short, free children’s arts and crafts session afterwards for all audiences, no extra ticket or booking required.

Every second Saturday of the month we host our popular Saturdays at Six concert series. Programmes range from organ recitals to chamber groups to soloists and choirs. Concerts run from 6-7pm and there is a retiring collection.

HCS’s new season kicks off with a performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s choral masterpiece the Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachts Oratorium, BWV 248).
The Christmas story as revealed in the gospels of St Luke and St Matthew is told in six parts, each part intended for performance on the relevant feast day of the Christmas season: The Birth, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, The Adoration of the Shepherds, The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus, The Journey of the Magi, and The Adoration of the Magi. As in Bach’s Passions, the story is narrated by an Evangelist and unified by meditative arias and by chorales reflecting the voice of the people.
The Christmas Oratorio was completed for performance over the Christmas season of 1734/35 in the churches of St Thomas and St Nicholas in Leipzig, where Bach was music director. It was mostly adapted (‘parodied’) by Bach from earlier works composed for other purposes, with new text compiled probably by Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander), the poet and librettist who collaborated with Bach on many of his Leipzig cantatas.
In what promises to be an uplifting start to the new season, HCS will sing the well-regarded English version of the Christmas Oratorio prepared in 1874 by John Troutbeck.

Gemma Maclean and Ben Morris will star in the new production of the 1966 Tony Award-Winning musical I Do! I Do! which will run at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in London this Autumn.
The show has music and lyrics by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, best known for their long running hit Off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks. This new production will feature all-new and updated material including never before heard songs by Tom Jones.
Based on the Jan de Hartog play, The Fourposter, I Do! I Do! chronicles the highs and lows of a couple’s marriage spanning over fifty years. I Do! I Do! was the first two-person musical to play on Broadway where it originally ran for 560 performances starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston prior to a successful 1996 Off-Broadway revival.
Gemma Maclean’s stage credits include The Wizard of Oz (London Palladium), 9 to 5 the Musical (ATG), The Witches of Eastwick (Prince of Wales Theatre), Sweet Charity (Menier Chocolate Factory) and We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre).
Ben Morris’ stage credits include The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (UK Tour), The Commitments (UK Tour), and Fiddler on the Roof (Savoy Theatre).
I Do! I Do! is directed by Joseph Hodges with musical direction by Henry Brennan, set design by Emily Bestow, lighting design by Joseph Ed Thomas and casting by Jay Gardner.
The new production will run at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Highgate Village from Tuesday 29 October until Saturday 16 November, with Press Night on Wednesday 30 October 2019 at 7.30pm. In this group show, Samantha Laub, Jason Sweidan and David Taylor present vibrant abstract paintings, influenced by abstract expressionism. The paintings demonstrate distinctive emotional responses to the natural.
Samantha, Jason and David have been developing a set of unique styles in close interaction with each other – all with strong colour use. The theme of present and remembered emotion displays their distinctive styles whilst drawing on a common theme.
Samantha’s works begin as spontaneous outpouring of energy and emotion that she then develops and refines into finished pieces. Her paintings are visceral, full of movement and texture.
Jason applies oil on canvases to construct and deconstruct images that reflect elements of nature. His paintings are predominantly fluid, physical and textured using gravity to allow the paint to evolve.
David’s work reflects memories of the natural in which strong colour use is combined with loose natural references that evoke a sense of fluidity, water or landscape.
All three artists are local to the exhibition and originally met at the Hampstead School of Art (HSOA).
Samantha is Creative Director of Gorgeous Brewery based in Highgate and also works in advertising, as well as being a painter. She has exhibited at a number of HSOA exhibitions and was also shortlisted in the National Open Art exhibition in 2016.
Jason works in investor relations as well as being an artist. He recently held his first solo art exhibition and has exhibited at several HSOA summer exhibitions and the Green and Stone summer exhibition 2019. His work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, Spain and Bermuda.

The class is suitable for beginners and is friendly and inclusive. Style is Hatha yoga with various influences – gentle, but still delivering strength and flexibility. Come and try a class to enhance your sense of wellbeing, release stress and tension and to experience deep relaxation. After a successful summer term at Highgate Library we are continuing running weekly after school yoga classes for children (4-9 yrs) at Jacksons Lane in the Autumn Term. There will be max. 15 places and 14 sessions, starting Tuesday 3rd September.
Classes consist of a gentle warm up, breathing exercises, a series of sun salutations and story based yoga poses and flow, including partner / group poses, yoga / mindfulness games (or arts & crafts) plus relaxation. Don’t hesitate to get in touch for more information. Drop-in pending availability.

Waste Not Want Not
Our speakers will
address the ‘waste hierarchy’ – how we can reduce, reuse
and recycle more waste, and the meeting is open to all.
We’ll hear from Carina Millstone who is Executive
Director of Feedback, a charity that campaigns to
transform our food systems, cutting the impact on our
planet, particularly from waste. Leigh McAlea will
discuss the impact of fast fashion – she is Head of
Communications at TRAID, a charity which aims to
“stop clothes from being thrown away.” We’ll also find
out what councils can do to tackle plastic waste from Ian
Kershaw of Haringey Council.
Addressing waste disposal – at the end of the waste
hierarchy – will be Ursula Taylor, Head of Legal and
Governance at North London Waste Authority. Ursula
will discuss what happens to our waste – many of us will
have been horrified to see images of piles of British
‘recycling’ strewn across the shores of South East Asia.
Our speakers will address what we can do as individuals
to reduce waste and discuss the sorts of policies that we
should be demanding from local and national politicians.
Following the talks there will be a Q & A session.

Our children’s art classes run on a termly basis, providing children aged 5-11 with an introduction to the basics of drawing and painting. Each week children will build on their skills learnt in previous weeks, developing their confidence and ability, with the help of our supportive and friendly teachers.
