Voyages of discovery, the age of enlightenment, exploration and collection of the world is the starting point for this exhibition. Early works by artists, such as Sydney Parkinson and Ferdinand Bauer are magnificent for their capture of a specific observational time.

My own voyage of discovery started at a very early age, having grown up in the Mallee of Western New South Wales, I have always drawn and collected things.

Capturing movement is a primary focus in my work at this point. It helps unlock anatomy and gives context and dimension to these wonderful animals.

It is profound to sit quietly and watch the near vertical digging action of an Echidna as it burrows with ancient digging claws for protection in the hard soil, its power to turn rocks and boulders bigger than itself and the surprise to observe it as an accomplished swimmer.  A Platypus in the wild, will swim and dibble at muddy edges with its beak. They hoop through the water’s surface; a muscular machine able to turn and dive with the fluidity of the water in which they swim.

My work is a tilt towards those who have gone before. I admire the tenacity of those early artists and their ability to work in such trying conditions. I hope my work adds to the bigger story; The collective voyage of discovery.

Susanna Storch: Facades @ Highgate Gallery
Sep 19 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Facade VIII (London), acrylic on canvas, 125 x 90cm, Susanna Storch 2019. All rights reserved

Highgate Gallery is delighted to be hosting the first ever London show of German artist Susanna Storch, whose exhibition comes to us from the Zofia Weiss Gallery in Cracow.

Susanna’s striking, large-scale paintings in acrylic reveal randomly observed scenes of everyday life, in an urban context.  Both people and buildings form her subject matter, and are given equal attention as we glimpse into the lives of the anonymous inhabitants of the city, whether it is Paris, Prague, London, Santiago de Chile, Valparaiso, Frankfurt, Tallin or her home town of Mainz.  Windows create the border between public and private space, and offer almost no view of the rooms behind.  This tension between the visible and the invisible give the paintings a narrative quality, as if one is watching a story about to unfold.  Reflections on the window panes, and curtain drapery, add a fluidity to the harsh geometry of the architectural exteriors, as well as offering a reflection of life back to the viewer.

Susanna has been developing her style, which she describes as Figurative Realism, since studying in Munich and Mainz in the 1980s.  She is also a portrait painter, and with both her Facades and her portraits, photographs form the basis of the pictures, which are worked up back in the studio.  She is a prolific artist who has exhibited in over 50 shows and art fairs since 2001, and she has work in public museums as well as private collections.

Exhibition continues until 26 Sept.

I feel I know the animals differently to the artists of the First Fleet and Flinders voyage to Australia, and it is this I wish to communicate.

Sep 25 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

THE SECOND BEST BED @ Upstairs at the Gatehouse
Sep 25 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Written by Avril Rowlands, starring Liz Grand, directed by Chris Jaeger

When Shakespeare died, he famously left his wife Anne only one thing – the second best bed. This superb one-woman play, full of both humour and pathos, has received great critical acclaim since its premier at the Swan Theatre Worcester in 2012. Liz Grand stars as Anne Hathaway on the night of Shakespeare’s funeral. The wake has finished, the mourners have all gone home, leaving Anne to remember her life with the most talented playwright the world has ever seen. Or was he? Did he write the plays? His widow would know if anybody did. Wouldn’t she?

Quills, Bills and Flightless Birds @ Lauderdale House
Sep 26 @ 11:30 am – 4:00 pm

Voyages of discovery, the age of enlightenment, exploration and collection of the world is the starting point for this exhibition. Early works by artists, such as Sydney Parkinson and Ferdinand Bauer are magnificent for their capture of a specific observational time.

My own voyage of discovery started at a very early age, having grown up in the Mallee of Western New South Wales, I have always drawn and collected things.

I feel I know the animals differently to the artists of the First Fleet and Flinders voyage to Australia, and it is this I wish to communicate.
