Interdisciplinary artist Elspeth Hamilton, who has also worked as an architect, glass artist, teacher, writer and environmental educator, presents an exhibition which spans over 40 years of work and focuses thematically on seascapes, riverscapes and portraits.
Her expressive paintings explore the language between figuration and abstraction, and are preoccupied with the tension Hamilton sees between ‘rough and smooth’, both in terms of the forces of nature, and our experience of life. It was a preoccupation she first realised on the Pembrokeshire coast where she was fascinated by the stillness of a rock pool juxtaposed with the wild sea. On the coastline in Dominica, she depicts the effects of erosion on the dramatic cliffs. In Spain, she captures an approaching storm and in Cornwall the elemental drama where sea meets rugged cliffs.
Wednesdays to Fridays 13:00-17:00, Saturdays 11:00-16:00Sundays 11:00-17:00, Mondays & Tuesdays Closed Private View: Friday 10 February 2023 18:00-20:30

What are your experiences of nature and green spaces?
How can we change the future of our environment?
Come along to a free direct film and sound recording workshop inspired by the current LUX exhibition Right of Way. Using natural elements found in Waterlow Park, as well as painting, writing, drawing and scratching directly onto 16mm celluloid film, participants will make individual direct film animations. We will edit these together alongside sound recordings from the session, to make a collaborative short film that expresses thoughts, feelings and demands about our future relationship with green space and nature.
At the end of the workshop we will project the films we’ve made together in the exhibition space at LUX. Participants will be able to take home their sections of direct film if they wish.
For 11-16 year olds. Snacks & refreshments provided.
The workshop runs from 1:30-4:30, but you can join in throughout the session.
Free, no need to book.
If young people are attending the workshop unaccompanied they will need to sign in and out at the start and end of the workshop.
DIRECT FILM, DIRECT ACTION is part of Film Club, a project by artist Amy Feneck in collaboration with LUX and its local communities.

This illustrated lecture will examine and celebrate a selection of paintings by four fascinating artists born within nine years of each other. They are Joan Baker, Ogwyn Davies, Kyffin Williams and Ernest Zobole. Collectively their artworks represent differing interpretations of modern and contemporary Wales.
Ceri Thomas is a freelance artist, art historian and curator based in south Wales. He has exhibited at the National Assembly for Wales, the National Eisteddfod of Wales, the National Library of Wales and the National Museum Wales and elsewhere and was elected a Royal Cambrian Academician on the recommendation of Kyffin Williams. He has researched and written books, exhibition catalogues and articles on numerous Welsh artists and has curated related exhibitions in Wales.

With incredible strength, a pole and a lot of humour, this powerful solo performance explores identity, objectification and what it is to be a gay, ‘barely visible’ woman in a raw and physical journey of empowerment.
With elements of physical theatre, pole and contemporary dance, Rowena Gander, and acclaimed physical theatre director, Elinor Randle, bring playfulness, authenticity, and boldness to this mesmerising work.
“Gander is an incredible physical theatre performer” Number 9
