La Fin Demain @ Jacksons Lane
Sep 24 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

How to survive in a world that seems to tip over at any moment?

Two persons, castaways, stranded on the beach of their imagination meet each other, get to know each other, get to trust each other. Together they loose and find balance, using simple, seemingly worthless objects: a wooden board, a cardboard tube, a rope, driftwood. Exploring their limits, they quest for a common equilibrium.

La fin demain is a creative piece of optimism in these strange times. A call for complicity and simplicity.

Zirkus Morsa is known for their fresh, simple and poetic approach to circus arts and stunning balances, both in a figurative context as in their amazing hand to hand technique on the rola bola.

Snapshot Photography and Highgate School’s Collection

Elaine Woodbridge has been a volunteer archivist at Highgate School for the last two years working on the school’s photographic slide collection and other projects.  Elaine has been fascinated with mid-century slide photographs since she began collecting them more than twenty years ago in South Africa.  In her journey with old slides, she has digitised and creatively edited them, shared them on social media, made art and given public talks about them.

Found photographs have an enthusiastic following in  popular culture where people do everything from collecting, blogging and making art with them, to trying to reunite them with their original owners.  The snapshots of yesterday have also influenced mainstream photography and given rise to new aesthetic traditions.  They have great creative potential and have been used by artists in a myriad of ways.  But they also contain an intimate and important record of people’s lives and society in past decades, as well as the worlds of work and education.  Elaine has read widely on this subject which finds itself at the meeting place of technology, history, popular culture, fine art and archives.

Elaine is completing a Masters degree in Archives and Records Management at the University of Dundee and previously studied Archaeology, Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Cape Town.  She is not averse to scratching around in flea markets and dusty drawers for lost photographs.  Elaine was delighted to be given the task of working with Highgate’s slide collections, showing school life in the 1960s and 1980s, which she says is a treasure trove of surprising images that open a window on decades past, and is a valuable component of the school’s archive holdings.  She asks what we can learn from them and how to understand the collection against the backdrop of British vernacular photography.

Elaine will discuss concepts of snapshot photography and offer behind-the-scenes insights into caring for and archiving a slide collection, covering storage and preservation, copyright and digitisation.  Her talk will be illustrated with stunning images from her South African collection, as well as those of Highgate School.  She will comment on the value of the collection for bringing to light the school’s changing education technology, built environment and way of life.  The 1960s to 1980s was a period on the brink of great technological and digital change.  It is a world still cherished in the living memories of many parents and alumni.

Join Elaine Woodbridge online on September 26 to hear more about this intriguing topic and see a glimpse of life at the school back in the day.

Black Sheep @ Jacksons Lane
Sep 29 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

After moving from Germany to London over ten years ago to live and work in a more diverse community, renowned sword swallower, circus artist and dazzling burlesque artist Livia Kojo Alour learned that life-long feelings of self-hatred and otherness are part internalised racism and part survival techniques. With a successful career under her stage name MisSa, but tiring of playing someone else full-time, Black Sheep has been long in the making, serving as a candid autobiographical work and a euphoric reclamation of Livia’s identity and ongoing fortitude.

Black Sheep is a story about a Black woman finding love and a testament of personal strength, developed through transcending the white gaze, overcoming institutional racism and leaning into radical vulnerability. Securing her place as a pivotal UK Queer Black voice while telling her story via a heady mix of physical theatre, spoken word, song and sword swallowing, Black Sheep is timely, unsettling and deeply personal.

Jack Frost and the Search for Winter @ Jacksons Lane
Oct 27 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

When temperatures drop and cold snaps come, that means only one thing: Jack Frost is here!

Jack Frost is a mischievous young boy with a frozen touch. His magic transforms the landscape and brings the colours of autumn and the chill of cold winter. He freezes the orange and red leaves, and covers the trees and ground with a glistening blanket of ice and snow.

But this year when winter comes around the snow begins to melt and along with it Jack’s extraordinary magic fades. With his powers lost he becomes just an ordinary boy.

In this wintery tale, Jack and his new found friend, search for winter and attempt to restore Jack’s special gift. Circling the globe they meet characters who share their own special shimmering seasonal winter magic, but will Jack’s magic return?

Join tutti frutti for this enchanting new play by poet and playwright Joseph Coelho with important environmental themes, a touch of wintery fun and original live music.

The Bloody Chamber @ Jacksons Lane
Nov 18 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

What are little girls made of?

They are made of the forest floor, the blood of the moon cycle, the fluttering of wings and the turning of keys. They are made of sweat, howling notes and desire. They are made of night scented stock – heady and sweet, the lily and the rose, the knife and the rope.

They are made of all the tales our Mothers told us.

And all the ones they didn’t dare.

Using circus as a physical vocabulary, the award-winning Proteus will translate the fever dream style of Angela Carter’s macabre fairy tales to the stage. The Bloody Chamber is a heady, erotic, and surprisingly funny re-phrasing of some of the most famous folk and fairy tales in Western culture.

At a moment when women and men across the country confront the double standards of safety, sex, and the fears of what goes bump in the night, Carter’s incendiary caustic take on fairy stories as cautionary tales could not be a more formidable challenge to the status quo.

Delicate @ Jacksons Lane
Nov 25 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Four different bodies collide. A show about how things need to fall apart before they can fall into place.

Their lives are different, but one thing unites them: there’re frustrated with their bodies changing, ageing, breaking, no longer obeying. They climb, hang, balance, slide, collapse, hold and hug. They examine marks life has left on their bodies. Film and audio fragments mirror these marks in the wounds inflicted on our planet. These characters are fighting the grind of what’s expected. And you might feel inspired to do the same.

Delicate is BSL interpreted, audio described and captioned. Delicate is presented by Extraordinary Bodies and co-produced with Figurteatret i Nordland and Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Professor Slug's House of Bugs @ Jacksons Lane

Professor Slug’s House of Bugs is a show all about bugs. Professor Slug is an eccentric expert on invertebrates who helps bugs out with their buggy problems – and you can too!

Get as strong as an ant! Teach a bee how to buzz! And help a dung beetle make a pooey perfume for its big date…

The House of Bugs is fully booked with all sorts of bugs seeking help from Professor Slug and his fellow bug experts (that’s you, the audience!) But can all these buggy problems be solved before the Queen Bee arrives, or will a swarm of honey-hungry wasps wreak havoc?

From the co-creator of the award winning One Duck Down, this interactive show is packed full of colourful puppets, catchy songs, and educational info about the wonderful world of bugs.

The puppets are designed by Georgia Hill (CBeebies) with music written by Catriona Gisby (Elle & the Pocket Belles).

Professor Slug’s House of Bugs is proud to be supported by charity partner Buglife.

Hazel uses the idea of gentleness as a tool in the face of great adversity and change. She explores feminine movement, giving it centre stage, and reacts to modernity’s harsh realities and urban construction.

Coils of PVC tubing are treated it as a companion. The duet of an organic body versus the inanimate tubes is playful yet antagonising. The tension between the two escalates throughout as she asks, is it there to hold her, entice her, keep her safe or restrain her?

Plastic has become one of the major environmental concerns in recent years. This piece is a reflection of how our generation is born into a plastic overflowing world and our role within it. The title is a reference to Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse.

Slapstick humour meets Beckett head on in a quest for life’s meaning and purpose.

After an exciting few years making and touring shows all over the world, Mercè and Patricia have somehow lost momentum and hit rock bottom. They always knew that making theatre would be difficult, but when they have to dress up as flamingos in a shopping centre to make ends meet, they seriously consider giving up.

Can their shared dream of staging Waiting for Godot get them back on track or will their long held ambition be strangled by red tape? A hilarious and sometimes moving exploration of companionship, co-dependency and what motivates us to keep going, even in the face of failure and bureaucratic brick walls.

Suitable for ages 14+

Ernie's Journey @ Jacksons Lane

Ernie’s Journey is a magical circus theatre adventure for family audiences. The seamless integration of circus, physical theatre, stage magic, poetry and puppetry is a truly dazzling spectacle.

An original live harp score takes the tale from the dreamy realms of distant shores to the most raucous sea shanties!

It felt like nobody really believed in Ernie and sometimes he wondered whether he even believed in himself. He discovers that being himself and following his own dreams can lead to all kinds of wild adventures, but it is the people we love who make it all worth it.

This show has been designed to connect audiences with the waterways around where they live and how they feed into national and international ocean systems. Ernie is a young boy from Haringey who finds an old pirate ship on the banks of the Thames.

Our partnership with Somerset Wildlife trust has informed the content of the show and workshops.
