Following his spell binding presentation last year at the University of London, The International Institute of Peace Studies (Scotland) and the Swiss Cottage Community Centre (London), sensei Corky Quakenbush is back in London to teach his innovative approach to Aikido known as Aiki-Lab – the result of more than thirty years of practice and research.

Sensei Corky classes are open to all – complete beginners and practitioners alike.
While most forms of Aikido are taught through the repetitive emulation of stereotyped katas, Aiki-Lab does not rely on such pre-planned techniques; its focus is on the flow of energy arising from the intentions of those involved, in order to create a space for aiki to manifest. In other words, the goal of Aiki-Lab is to develop a presence that allows for a “center-to-center” connection with an opponent leading to a spontaneous, harmonious response to an attack – known as an aiki resolution.

Caring Connections provides volunteer led friendship groups which support older people to stay in contact with friends.

Older people can be involved with Caring Connections either as participants or as volunteers offering peer support to others. We welcome older volunteers who have experience of long term health conditions, and volunteers who understand the impact of long term conditions upon older peoples’ lives.

John Etheridge formed Sweet Chorus in 1998 as a personal tribute to Stephane Grappelli ,the greatest violinist of Jazz, with whom he had toured for many years in the late 70’s, early 80’s ..

The band takes it’s cue from the great Reinhardt /Grappelli repertoire of 1930’s classics but is in no way a slavish  itation of that music .

What is Zumba? It’s an fitness programme featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music. Zumba GOLD offers  a modified class for active older adults and it recreates the original moves you love at a lower-intensity. How It Works? The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba  choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. Come ready to sweat, and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong. Benefits? Class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility and balance!

Regular weekly mixed gender classes commence on Friday 9^th January (11am-12pm) with tea and registration at 10:30am, and admission only £3 per class. All are welcome!

Highgate councillors hold a surgery at the HLSI (Highgate Literary and Scientific Society, 11 South Grove, Pond Square) on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings, and at Jacksons Lane on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings. There is no surgery on 5th Saturdays.

Councillors’ surgeries provide the opportunity for a constituent to meet one of his/her councillors face-to-face. The purpose is usually to discuss and hopefully to help resolve a local or personal issue in which Haringey council has or could have a role. Meeting at a surgery can be particularly useful when there are numerous documents relevant to the issue. Surgeries are normally held in the members’ reading room of the HLSI, but a private space is available if required. No booking is needed.

Welcome to the home of Mr and Mrs Smith – in the suburbs of London. The Martins have popped in for a game of whist. Or is it dinner? Nobody seems quite sure. Why are they four hours late? Where has Mary the Maid been all afternoon? Is she really a famous detective? And why is the local fire chief hiding in the shrubbery?

There will be daggers drawn, kisses exchanged and hammers fetched. Frightful stories will be told about red-eyed children, retired country doctors and a snake with a murderous left-hook. And there will be fire. Lots of talk about fire. It’s too highly taxed.

Ionesco’s exploration of the frailties of language, and of the absurdity that arises out of our every day failures to communicate, is more relevant than ever in a world where text speak and poor email etiquette routinely cause offence and confusion. Slip of the Lip Theatre (www.slipofthelip.co.uk) draws out the poignant contemporary relevance while staying faithful to the text and stage directions of Donald Watson’s original translation of this 1950s absurdist classic.

Directed by Paul Hoskins and loved by audiences and critics alike, this “side-splittingly hilarious” comedy of manners is Ionesco’s iconoclastic, absurdist masterwork about distressed communication and that maddening English habit of saying one thing and meaning something else entirely. Ringing doorbells, contrarian clocks and a mysterious bald soprano provide the, at times cacophonous, soundtrack.
