Tongue and Cheek @ Jacksons Lane
Mar 15 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

A night of fresh alternative comedy and circus theatre.

Bristol-based emerging artists bring two new experimental shows with a surreal twist on spectacle with comedy at its core:

Transcendental
Using trapeze and a comical amount of existentialism, Transcendental is a fever dream journey through the absurdity of being alive. A satirical deep dive into grotesque aspects of the human experience.

Hiding in Plain Sight
Using physical comedy and object manipulation to explore surveillance culture, Hiding in Plain Sight tackles juggling our virtual identities and our authentic selves.

Suitable for ages 12+

Concert – Vivaldi: Gloria and Gjeilo: Sunrise Mass @ St Michael's Church
Mar 16 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Voxcetera returns to the beautiful St Michael’s Church with two dazzling works for choir and strings, written nearly 300 years apart.

Vivaldi: Gloria

In a crowded field, little beats this for exuberant Baroque joy. Yet it is full of variety, from the slow and tender “Et in terra pax” to the effervescent “Domine, Fili unigenite”, the choir accompanied throughout by sprightly strings, oboe and trumpet.

Ola Gjeilo: Sunrise Mass

“Most of my favourite composers are film composers working in America today” says the New York-based Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, and this thrilling mass pays tribute to the emotions, adrenaline and sense of wonder of film music. Scored for choir and strings and using traditional Latin texts, the 30-minute piece is strong on melody and rich in harmony, opening with gorgeous shimmering chords that emerge magically out of silence. It’s unmistakably modern, but it’s also in touch with early sacred music including Gregorian chant.

with:
Voxcetera chamber choir
Jane Hopkins, conductor
Ellie Sperling & Bethany Partridge, soloists
String orchestra, oboe, trumpet, organ

Voxcetera is a chamber choir celebrating sacred and secular music from medieval times to the present day under the direction of its founding conductor Jane Hopkins. The choir’s achievements include its popular Christmas concerts; performances with chamber ensembles of Fauré’s Requiem, Saint-Saëns’ Requiem and Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, at St Michael’s Highgate; tours to Germany and Ireland; performances at St Martin-in-the-Fields, St. John Smith Square, St. Stephen Walbrook and East Finchley Arts Festival; appearances at the Science Museum, British Library and the Southbank Centre; and a variety of recording work.

Guerrilla Gardening
Mar 23 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Our Guerrilla Gardening group has been busy with planning for 2024 since our evening workshop in November. Work has included a walk-about through the N6 area to survey 16 potential sites for our activities and developing a map with notes, so that we can assign actions (even if just monitoring) to each site.

We are now looking for people that can join us to grow this initiative. If you can help out at a gardening event (site clearing, pruning, planting), or might be interested in becoming a ‘champion’ for a particular site near you that needs care, or you simply want to know more, please do get in touch via the contact form on the website or by direct email to: infrastructure@highgatesociety.com. A member of the team will be in touch. You can also sign up to our occasional Guerrilla Gardening newsletter.

Meanwhile, the dates for gardening events have been fixed – see below – so do ‘save the date’ in your diary, if you are interested. We will provide further information as to the event activity and location, each month. Please note, some are evening events and they are not only Saturdays!

Exhibition Opening: Nina Thomas: ‘Place Setting’ @ LUX
Apr 6 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Exhibition Opening: Nina Thomas: ‘Place Setting’ @ LUX

We are excited to welcome our audience to the opening of Nina Thomas’s first solo exhibition in London ‘Place Setting’, which was realised in collaboration with Animate Projects and the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke on Trent.

You’re welcome to drop in anytime between 2 pm and 4 pm to experience the exhibition. Artist Nina Thomas will be present for casual conversations.

BSL interpretation will be provided by Lorna Patterson and Tayo Igbintade during the event.

This event is free. RSVP is encouraged.

About the exhibition:

The exhibition title, ‘Place Setting’, alludes to a set of tableware for dining, and also resonates with how lives are shaped by a particular culture, industry and workers. Nina Thomas’s film of the same name explores themes of loss, local history and memory, community, and deaf experience, particularly within the context of Stoke-on-Trent and the ceramics industry. The film layers photography, archival imagery, Spode ceramic patterns, text and captions, with sound by Chu-Li Shewring and text by Nina. The creative descriptive sound captions are a collaboration between Nina and Anita Wolska-Kaslow. Nina approached sound creatively, working with Chu-Li and Anita to think about what sound and silence might mean from a deaf perspective.

As part of her research Nina interviewed Malcolm Johnson and Anne Cartridge who had been pupils at The Mount School for the Deaf in Stoke-on-Trent in the 1960s/1970s, and who went on to spend their working lives in the Potteries. The interviews provide both a context for and documentation of significant local history, feeding into Nina’s interest in what it means to lose deaf clubs and other community spaces which once held rich cultural, linguistic and social value.

‘Place Setting’ was commissioned by Animate Projects and British Ceramics Biennial. The project has been supported by Deaflinks, The Willows School and Spode Museum Trust.

Supported using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Annie’s Yoga in Highgate @ Highgate United Reformed Church
Apr 16 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

The class is suitable for beginners and is friendly and inclusive. Style is Hatha yoga with various influences – gentle, but still delivering strength and flexibility.   Come and try a class to enhance your sense of wellbeing, release stress and tension and to experience deep relaxation. Mats provided, free parking (for now, but check signs!) no need to book – just turn up. The class is in the beautiful church – it’s set back a bit and has big blue doors. The class is mixed level/mixed ability/mixed age. I am a registered BWY teacher and fully insured. For more info about me/my yoga, have a look at my website
