Hitch! – Mary Bijou Cabaret @ Jacksons Lane
Jul 25 @ 8:00 pm – 9:15 pm

For the closing night of this year’s festival prepare for a thrilling adventure into the dark, twisted world of Alfred Hitchcock.

Walking a thin line between hilarity and horror, Hitch! was created by a troupe of international circus and cabaret artists, veterans of NoFit State Circus and the underground live art scene of London.

The audience is terrorised and tantalised as bizarre acts delve into the extraordinary mind of ‘The Master of Suspense’.

Basically, we’re seeing off the festival with a huge, peculiar, slightly terrifying but definitely awesome circus cabaret. Hang around afterwards for a late bar, cocktail concoctions and some post-show performances to die for…

Jess Love: And the Little One Said @ Jacksons Lane
Jul 14 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Combining high-level circus skills with pathos, humour and beauty, Jess Love creates a vision that is at once delicately touching, visually enchanting and heart-warmingly playful. Dark clowning, dirty acrobatics and surreal sideshow feats go hand-in-hand with slapstick, roller-skating, hula hoops, skipping and hopscotch acrobatics – phew! With crafted storytelling and awe inspiring images on a bed of roses and broken glass, it’s so sweet you’ll want to squeal!

“LIVELY AND ENTERTAINING…SERIOUSLY WACKY…EXCITING…CHARISMATIC”★★★★ THE AGE

Mondays @ the Mills: The geography of wine

3 July 2017

The geography of wine

Phil Harrison, Highgate School
It is often remarked that wine is ‘geography in a bottle’ – that it is a fundamental reflection of the place in which it is grown. This discussion will examine some of the factors that influence global viticulture, concentrating on the great wine regions of France and Spain as well as those in the New World. There will be consideration of soils, climate and topography, as well as that quintessentially French concept of terroir.

Talks take place on Mondays at 7pm in the AV Room in the Mills Centre. Refreshments, including wine, are available from 6.30 pm and afterwards.

Zoe Francis with the Jim Mullen 3 @ Lauderdale House
May 17 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Remembering Blossom Dearie

Zoe Francis (voice), Jim Mullen (guitar), Barry Green (piano) & Mick Hutton (d bass)

Zoe Francis is “a singer to listen out for. She communicates a love and understanding of classic American song with the lightest of touches. A classy set.” – The Guardian.

Tonight she weaves new magic and wit into the repertoire of Blossom Dearie, the legendary 1950’s and 60’s American pianist/singer who was a well-loved regular at Ronnie Scott’s, where Zoe also sold out earlier this year.  Zoe’s harmonic knowledge, immaculate articulation, and ‘grip’ on time – an absolute essential for jazz musicians – wins her the admiration of her three brilliant colleagues, who are all heavyweight names on the British jazz scene.

Brahms and Liszt in Highgate with Gavin and Murray @ Pond Square Chapel
Dec 9 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Join Gavin Davies (violin) and Murray Hipkin (piano) for a relaxed evening of celebrated romantic music and delicious wine

In another little step back to the ethos of the London Novello Ensemble – which is the presentation of great music outside the formal constraints of the concert hall – Murray and Gavin present the two opposites of late 19th century romanticism along with music by Delius, Vitali and Sarasate, and a selection of popular tangos including Piazzolla’s famous ‘Libertango’

Gavin Davies studied the violin with Marta Eitler and at the Royal College of Music with Jaroslav Vanecek and Natasha Boyarsky. He combines a freelance orchestral career with ensembles such as the London Philharmonic and BBC Concert orchestras with regular chamber music and solo performances.

Murray Hipkin is a fulltime member of the music staff at English National Opera, where he has conducted The Mikado, The Gondoliers, The Pirates of Penzance, Kismet, Carousel, Chess and Man of la Mancha. He is musical director of the Pink Singers and the North London Chorus and he recently finished filming Anyone Can Sing for ENO/Sky Arts in the role of music supervisor and accompanist.

Programme to include:

Brahms – Sonata No. 1 in G

Liszt – Romance

Delius – Sonata No. 3

Vitali – Chaconne

Sarasate – Zigeunerweisen

Tangos by Albeniz, Gade, and Piazzolla
