Highgate Choral Society sings Brahms German Requiem @ All Hallows Church
Nov 12 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

The opening concert in our 2016-2017 season has a sombre feel, commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. Starting with The Banks of Green Willow by George Butterworth, who was killed in action on 5th August 1916, aged 31, this work is complemented by Ronald Corp’s The Somme – A Lament. The mood lifts with the choral arrangement of Serenade to Music by Butterworth’s contemporary, Vaughan Williams and the programme closes with Brahms’s glorious German Requiem.

From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads @ Jacksons Lane
Feb 27 @ 8:00 pm – 9:15 pm

This acclaimed Edinburgh sell-out production from Jacksons Lane’s Artistic Director Adrian Berry tells the story of a young David Bowie obsessive.

Martin is a boy with problems – an illness no-one understands and a head full of sound and vision. So when an unexpected gift arrives on his birthday, Martin embarks on a thrilling journey in the footsteps of his obsession, leading him to discover some long-hidden truths about himself. What follows will change his life forever…

Powerful and touching, music and magic realism collide in this darkly funny and moving solo production featuring Alex Walton and the voice of writer & comedian Rob Newman. With a blistering Bowie soundtrack, the life of the pop fan is dissected in this tale of unnatural teenage wildlife.

“Moving and touching, it blew me away. I cried my eyes out. You forget you’re in a theatre, and you can’t ask for much more than that” BBC London Live

Brahms and Liszt in Highgate with Gavin and Murray @ Pond Square Chapel
Dec 9 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Join Gavin Davies (violin) and Murray Hipkin (piano) for a relaxed evening of celebrated romantic music and delicious wine

In another little step back to the ethos of the London Novello Ensemble – which is the presentation of great music outside the formal constraints of the concert hall – Murray and Gavin present the two opposites of late 19th century romanticism along with music by Delius, Vitali and Sarasate, and a selection of popular tangos including Piazzolla’s famous ‘Libertango’

Gavin Davies studied the violin with Marta Eitler and at the Royal College of Music with Jaroslav Vanecek and Natasha Boyarsky. He combines a freelance orchestral career with ensembles such as the London Philharmonic and BBC Concert orchestras with regular chamber music and solo performances.

Murray Hipkin is a fulltime member of the music staff at English National Opera, where he has conducted The Mikado, The Gondoliers, The Pirates of Penzance, Kismet, Carousel, Chess and Man of la Mancha. He is musical director of the Pink Singers and the North London Chorus and he recently finished filming Anyone Can Sing for ENO/Sky Arts in the role of music supervisor and accompanist.

Programme to include:

Brahms – Sonata No. 1 in G

Liszt – Romance

Delius – Sonata No. 3

Vitali – Chaconne

Sarasate – Zigeunerweisen

Tangos by Albeniz, Gade, and Piazzolla
