The New Junior School and Fibonacci
David Smith, former Head of Physics
Highgate’s magnificent new Junior School opened for business in September of last year. After exploring the history of the Junior School, David will describe the philosophy behind the new structure, making particular mention of the Leonardo Bonacci – known as Fibonacci – and the features around the building that his sequence inspired.
See Waterlow Park like you’ve never seen it before through the expert eyes of local historian Pam Cooper, who wrote the definitive history book on the Park.
In 1889 Waterlow Park was given as a ‘garden for the gardenless’ but it was a long journey from the Tudor nobles who claimed the area for country residences until the Victorian Sir Sydney Waterlow brought it together in a grand act of philanthropy.
Meet in the central internal Courtyard at Lauderdale House.
Hazel will be running an exciting mixed media art class with a different focus and theme each 6 week term beginning with botanical art. Classes will run from 10.00am to 1.00pm each Thursday.
Beginners and experienced artists welcome as Hazel has taught art for almost 25 years and is able to break down learning to make art accessible for all.

The Tina May Quintet
Tina May (voice), Karen Sharp (saxes), Robin Aspland (piano), Arnie Somogyi (d. bass) & Winston Clifford (drums)
This very swinging quintet is led by the incredibly versatile and talented Tina May who was breathtakingly exciting on the Swanage Festival main stage last year. Tonight her jazz soul is the guiding force and one glance at her line up tells you that this will be a very special evening. It’s the first appearance at Lauderdale by British Jazz Award winner Karen Sharp who first worked with Tina when they were both with the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Since then they have collaborated and recorded together extensively.
Expect some straight ahead jazz and ….always some forgotten gems alongside standards – but swung and sung in Tina’s inimitable style.
Our programmer Brian Blain compares her appearance at Swanage to Anita O’Day’s sensational contribution to that classic 1960 documentary Jazz On a Summer’s Day and tell us that ‘we could not start our Spring season in any better way’.
‘that great rarity…a singer who enhances a song.’ Dave Gelly, the Observer.

Join local artist, Jo Pearl, ceramic sculptor and animation filmmaker, for a playful workshop that breathes clay into life while exploring OmVed Gardens’ flora and micro fauna. Inspired by her body of work ‘Unearthed’ on view at the Alchemy exhibition, ceramic artist and animation filmmaker Jo Pearl will host a playful workshop inviting participants to sculpt the fascinating microbes and mini critters that live beneath healthy soil and bring them to life using simple stop motion. This workshop is suitable for any age from 8 to 108. Participants must have a smart phone with the iMotion app (free to download) and be able to use it unsupervised. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. “Breathing life into clay and clay into life – has become my definition of animation. I have become fascinated with the soil that is at the root of the ceramic discipline, enchanted by the truly overwhelming richness of life beneath our feet. I celebrate that abundance here with ‘Unearthed’, a project that zooms us down and focuses in on the choreography of ever-more tiny beings that inhabit the soil, a largely unknown place that holds one of the keys to life on earth.” – Jo Pearl |
