Bring your bear along to meet Hugless Douglas, lovable creation of children’s book writer and illustrator David Melling, at this year’s Children’s Book Fair on Saturday 5th March at HLSI .
There will be secondhand books and home-made cakes and biscuits for sale, children’s activities, face-painting, and competitions.
Muswell Hill Children’s Bookshop will be here selling Hugless Douglas books.

HLSI’s annual book fair with something for everyone who loves books. Thousands of good quality second-hand books on all subjects: fiction, history, biography, literature, travel and much more, priced from 50p. Collections this year include art, photography, map books and special/antiquarian editions. Seriously good bargains.
TEST OF TIME ENTERTAINMENT invite you to an evening of quizzing, dancing, live entertainment, festive nibbles and fun, all to raise money for the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION.
Ticket price includes:
- Quiz Entry (Prizes to be won!)
- Live entertainment from a variety of our acts
- Festive finger-food for each table inc. Yorkshire puddings filled with roast turkey, sage & onion stuffing and cranberry sauce; Stilton and red grape bites; Mince pies and many more festive treats!
- Post-quiz ‘Christmas Cheese’ disco
There will also be a pay-bar open all night.
The quiz will be organised into teams of 10.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is a UK-based charity organisation, funding research into improving treatment, diagnosis & prevention of cardiovascular disease. The charity also funds education, care and awareness campaigns.
All profits from this event will go directly to The British Heart Foundation.

Highgate Society vs HLSI Tuesday May 12 th 7.30 for 8.00pm at 11 South Grove Feeling quizzical? It’s time for the annual challenge between HiSoc & HLSI. Come and join your fellow Society Swots for an evening of fun – frustration – frivolity and ultimate victory? See you there?!
From the comfort of your home, follow in a virtual tour in Charles Dickens’ footsteps in a walk from Highgate to the hamlet of North End on the border with Hampstead and Hampstead Garden Suburb. We will follow some of Bill Sikes escape route after murdering Nancy in Oliver Twist, see houses that Dickens stayed in; learn about his friendship with philanthropist Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts; view the house that inspired Steerforth’s mother’s house in David Copperfield and peep into Highgate Cemtrey where several members of the Dickens family were buried and follow the Gordon rioters in Barnaby Rudge towards Lord Mansfield’s country estate at Kenwood (Caen Wood). We will pay a visit o the Spaniard’s Inn featured in the Pickwick Papers and continue with Bill Sikes’ journey in Oliver Twist from Highgate Hill across the grounds of Kenwood towards Northend and Hendon. We finish in North End where we view the 17th farmhouse that Dickens lodged in after the death of his sister in law Mary Hogarth.
