Money, Banking & Social Harm @ Friends Meeting House
Dec 5 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

via http://www.meetup.com/Positive-Money/events/86204832/

At the heart of the social harms being caused by our current economic crisis is a crucial but little known aspect of our monetary system. Legislation 160 years old allows private banks to determine not only the amount of money circulating in our economy but also where it goes. This antique privilege and its modern consequences are the subject of a public meeting hold in Muswell Hill on December 5th.

You are invited to a Screening of new documentary97% Owned” new documentary that exposes how our privatised, debt-based monetary system grants banks the power to create money.

Featuring frank interviews and commentary from economists, campaigners and former bankers, 97% Owned shows in just 60 minutes how this privilege allows banks to shape the economy, cause crises and push house prices out of reach. Successive governments and the Bank of England have failed to tackle what amounts to a privatisation of the money supply, economists have missed its significance and the subject is largely ignored by economic pundits in the mainstream media.

Produced by Queuepolitely and featuring Ben Dyson of Positive Money, Josh Ryan-Collins of The New Economics Foundation, Ann Pettifor of PRIME,  Paul Moore the “HBOS Whistleblower”, Simon Dixon of Bank to the Future and Nick Dearden from the Jubliee Debt Campaign, this is the first documentary to tackle this issue from a UK-perspective.

Now radical change to the monetary system is in the air; just what it is and how we can hasten it will be covered in the presentation and discussion following the film.

So if you care about social justice and economic stability, let alone unaffordable house prices, do come and bring friends.

It’s free but donations to cover costs will be welcome on the day.

If you know others who share your concerns do please spread the word and forward this email. Promoted byPositiveMoney an independent, non-party research and campaign organisation aiming to raise public awareness of the UK’s monetary system. For more information: www.positivemoney.org.uk

Mama’s Kitchen – Layla Rosa @ Jacksons Lane
Jul 22 @ 8:00 pm – 9:15 pm

Mama’s Kitchen is a place for experimentation and curious concoctions, serving up a menu of pioneering performance.

The brainchild of Shunt artist Layla Rosa and curated especially for Postcards, expect circus artists, theatre makers, musicians, visual artists and a whole heap of other exciting performances that we’re not entirely sure about just yet.

But if previous outings at The Shunt Lounge are anything to go by, Mama’s Kitchen will be unexpected and hugely memorable.

Travellers’ Tales from Central Asia @ Highgate Society
Jan 21 @ 3:15 pm – 5:30 pm

Free entry – complimentary tea and cake – non members welcome

This is the third in what is now becoming an annual Highgate Society event – a January afternoon
travel talk and tea. Our first, in 2016, featured visits to North America by Catherine Budgett Meakin
and to the Andes by Richard Webber. Last year it was the turn of Michael Hammerson who dusted
off his slides and diary account from 1966 to treat us to a wonderful account of his experiences as a
young man visiting the battlefields of the American Civil War.
This year our focus shifts to Asia where we will hear travellers’ accounts of visits to three countries in
the Caucasus and Central Asia that receive very few foreign visitors.
The presenters will whet your appetite for a visit with images of magnificent mountain scenery as
well as heritage site of world-wide significance. This will be presented within a broader discussion of
sustainable tourism, the impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union, geo-political uncertainty and
social acceptance and resistance to the spread of Western values.
Do you need a guide to visit these countries? Or should you join a group? How safe will you be? And
how easy is it to engage in meaningful discussion with the views of local people? Come and hear.

Programme
3.15 1: Kyrgistan: Guyonne James
3.40 2: Armenia: Richard Webber
4.05 Questions, answers and discussion in response to talks 1 and 2
4.20 Tea
4.35 3: Iran: Betty Pires + team (the precise members of which are to be confirmed)
5.00 Questions, answers and discussion on practicalities of a central Asia visit
