Caring Connections supports older people with long term health conditions to keep socially active. It is for Haringey residents aged 50 or over with health condition(s) who are at risk of becoming isolated or depressed. Caring Connections provides volunteer led friendship groups which support older people to stay in contact with friends.

Older people can be involved with Caring Connections either as participants or as volunteers offering peer support to others. We welcome older volunteers who have experience of long term health conditions, and volunteers who understand the impact of long term conditions upon older peoples’ lives.

The Eight Sessions 

This new and innovative group will take place over eight weekly sessions, each of 2-hours duration and covers the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation, applied theory and practice. Some aspects of CBT will also be used within the course syllabus where required to help group members to deal with dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviours. This specific group has been successfully taught in several London universities and also within the NHS. This group will help you to:

• improve your focus and concentration levels
• lower bodily stress and increase relaxation
• explore how your mind works
• explore how your mind habitually creates unhealthy thought processes and worry
• help you to prevent the arising of depressive moods before they spiral
• achieve a robust and healthy mind, accepting reality and the world around you
• work towards acceptance of unhealthy emotions
• achieve a deep sense of calm, patience and stillness
• grow and mature as a true human being and explore what it means to be ‘me’
• learn about the role of compassion to yourself and others

This will be particularly helpful for those people experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, attention problems or any condition involving a fast-thinking anxious mind.

IMPORTANT NOTE 

Commitment to the full x8 weekly sessions is imperative, as is the diligent undertaking of daily life meditation tasks between sessions. Only those people who are willing to make the commitment and complete the between session tasks should attend.   Places are limited to ensure a high quality of client support. This course is open to everyone but attendance must be booked in advance and approved by the course leader before the beginning of the programme. All attendees must be 18+ with any exceptions discussed prior to the beginning of the course.

When – Monday evenings beginning on 19th January 2014 for x8 straight weeks.   

Time – 6.30pm to 8.30pm.  

Price – £225 (Concessions £195 for OAPS, F/T students, unemployed, if booking as a pair/couple) – please note this can be paid in x2 instalments, with half the payment being made as a deposit prior to the course and the balance being due just after session 1.

The classes are Mixed Level Small Group Classes (max 10 participants), feel free to join whether you’re completely new to pilates or have years of experience, the classes are fun, relaxing and refreshing for Everyone! I put emphasise on Breathing and Stretching, with lots of work on your Core, so you feel relaxed though very strong after classes.

Practising pilates is also a great way to recover from injuries, to keep fit throughout your pregnancy and to gain back your strength after giving birth.

A twisted, mystical tribe have gathered in a black fortress. As music, specially composed for the performance, takes over and the family reunion goes awry, the end result is shattered minds and damaged bodies. But who are these people? What do they need? It is universal. It is globally wanted.

The iron cube on the stage is a small mansion, a family home for the strange characters, and it fills with vulnerability and violence. Globally Wanted is a performance of absurd happenings told through circus, acrobatics, parkour, physical theatre and an ingenious design. It pulls the audience so deep into the performance that it is rarely experienced.

Finnish company, Company Uusi Maailma performs for the very first time in London with the UK premiere of Globally Wanted.

Globally Wanted shows at Jackson’s Lane has been carried out with the support of Finnish Circus Information Centre.

The third Highgate Debate to be held at Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution tackles the issue

of current drugs policy. Our two prominent speakers take opposing positions, roughly equating

to a ‘tender’ or a ‘tough’ approach to users. Molly Meacher will argue for a more liberal drugs

policy, while Will Blair will oppose any change. As with previous debates, they will be supported

by seconders from local 6th forms. Members of the audience will then be invited to make

contributions from the floor. The Debates will be free and open to the general public, as well as

HLSI members.

Hill Homes are working in partnership with our local Age UK Haringey are bringing Zumba to Trees – a brilliant opportunity to get moving, keep fit and have fun with music at the same time!

What is Zumba? It’s an fitness programme featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music. Zumba GOLD offers  a modified class for active older adults and it recreates the original moves you love at a lower-intensity. How It Works? The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba  choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. Come ready to sweat, and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong. Benefits? Class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility and balance!

Regular weekly mixed gender classes commence on Friday 9^th January (11am-12pm) with tea and registration at 10:30am, and admission only £3 per class. All are welcome!

Liz has created a collection of paintings of plants in close detail: uprooted, revealing their complex structures and individual history, and full of visual delight. Although not intended as a scientific study, the paintings bring us to a new relationship with nature.

Liz Miranda’s life as an artist has an international flavour. She was born in Iran, studied in England and France, worked, taught and exhibited, mainly in Brazil, and then returned to England to paint, etch, bring up a family and teach. She continues to teach, concentrating on painting from direct observation. In 2010 Liz exhibited at the Highgate Gallery and in this show her work is, as always, in oil on canvas or wood.

For the past few years Liz has been painting plants in close detail. She likes to work with the whole shape of each plant but also wants to focus on its component parts – roots, stalks, seed-heads, pods, the changes of colour, the texture and thickness of stem with the position on it of the leaves and nodes.

However realistic, her works are not illustrations. Liz wants them to be true but accuracy is not the goal: they are paintings. Painting is the second stage of freezing the potential development of these natural forms; though they were already denied growth when uprooted from the soil.

Her subjects range from modest London weeds to exotic plants, flowers, trees and grasses of the tropics. All are closely observed to reveal their individual integrity.

Join in with all your favourite songs from Disney and musical favourites such as Frozen, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and loads more. Sister Mary, Highgate’s very own star-struck nun, will lead the way.

Highgate councillors hold a surgery at the HLSI (Highgate Literary and Scientific Society, 11 South Grove, Pond Square) on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings, and at Jacksons Lane on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings. There is no surgery on 5th Saturdays.

Councillors’ surgeries provide the opportunity for a constituent to meet one of his/her councillors face-to-face. The purpose is usually to discuss and hopefully to help resolve a local or personal issue in which Haringey council has or could have a role. Meeting at a surgery can be particularly useful when there are numerous documents relevant to the issue. Surgeries are normally held in the members’ reading room of the HLSI, but a private space is available if required. No booking is needed.

Please come and help us for this annual deep litter clean.

We had a great turnout last year, but the litter bugs have been back and we need lots of volunteers to help remove fly tipping, waste and litter. This year the event will only be for the one day. We’ll be going into the depths of the undergrowth to see what surprises lie in store. From past experience we expect to find everything including the kitchen sink (in case you’re anticipating a refurb). Key to making this a fun and productive event is getting a big turn out as we did last year. Everyone involved was unanimous in commenting how rewarding the day had been and we were delighted with the result. Bring family and friends along and make it a day to remember.

We will supply gloves, litter pickers and bags. Strong footwear is essential. This event is organised with assistance from Haringey Council Parks Department

Commitment to the full x8 weekly sessions is imperative, as is the diligent undertaking of daily life meditation tasks between sessions. Only those people who are willing to make the commitment and complete the between session tasks should attend.   Places are limited to ensure a high quality of client support. This course is open to everyone but attendance must be booked in advance and approved by the course leader before the beginning of the programme. All attendees must be 18+ with any exceptions discussed prior to the beginning of the course.

Price – £225 (Concessions £195 for OAPS, F/T students, unemployed, if booking as a pair/couple) – please note this can be paid in x2 instalments, with half the payment being made as a deposit prior to the course and the balance being due just after session 1.

Liz has created a collection of paintings of plants in close detail: uprooted, revealing their complex structures and individual history, and full of visual delight. Although not intended as a scientific study, the paintings bring us to a new relationship with nature.

Liz Miranda’s life as an artist has an international flavour. She was born in Iran, studied in England and France, worked, taught and exhibited, mainly in Brazil, and then returned to England to paint, etch, bring up a family and teach. She continues to teach, concentrating on painting from direct observation. In 2010 Liz exhibited at the Highgate Gallery and in this show her work is, as always, in oil on canvas or wood.

For the past few years Liz has been painting plants in close detail. She likes to work with the whole shape of each plant but also wants to focus on its component parts – roots, stalks, seed-heads, pods, the changes of colour, the texture and thickness of stem with the position on it of the leaves and nodes.

However realistic, her works are not illustrations. Liz wants them to be true but accuracy is not the goal: they are paintings. Painting is the second stage of freezing the potential development of these natural forms; though they were already denied growth when uprooted from the soil.

Her subjects range from modest London weeds to exotic plants, flowers, trees and grasses of the tropics. All are closely observed to reveal their individual integrity.
