Philip Sanderson: Places, People and Light. @ Highgate Gallery
Mar 31 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Philip Sanderson  Highgate Hill, oil on canvas.

We are delighted to shows a significant body of work from acclaimed local artist Philip Sanderson, who captures townscapes and other scenes from a wide variety of sources, particularly London and Highgate.  He aims for a lightness of touch and fluidity that is at once engaging and appealing.  At the same time, his work retains a discipline and structure that gives it weight, so that the overall impression is one of beauty and substance.

Philip paints in oils and watercolours and says that he “endeavours to represent subjects in a loose and attractive way”.  His work is particularly concerned with the effect of light, particularly sunlight, and how this gives subtly contrasting tones of light and dark to his subject matter.  He often depicts people in his pictures, representing life and movement and adding another layer of interest and relevance to the familiar local scenes.

For many years an active member of the Highgate Watercolour Group and a participant in art courses and local art shows, Philip also had a career in the NHS, where he was a consultant microbiologist working in Edgware and Barnet.  He studied problems of infections acquired within hospitals and helped to found and edit a journal dedicated to this subject.

This exhibition is an opportunity to see a collection of pictures from the last five years, following a successful exhibition at St. Martin-in-the-Fields.  Most of the works are oils; all work will be for sale.

Highgate Gallery open Tuesday-Friday 1-5pm, Saturday 11am-4pm, Sunday 11am-5pm; closed Mondays.

LUX/ Highgate Cemetery Talks: Claudia Jones @ LUX - online
Jun 26 @ 12:00 am – 11:45 pm
LUX/ Highgate Cemetery Talks: Claudia Jones @ LUX - online

Adjacent to Waterlow Park where LUX is based is Highgate Cemetery, one of London’s finest cemeteries and the final resting place of a number of extraordinary people. During the lockdown when visiting the cemetery is difficult, LUX, in partnership with the Cemetery is organising a series of online virtual visits with thinkers and artists reflecting on life and work of some of the inspirational people buried there.

The first event is a discussion on the life and legacy of Claudia Jones (1915–1964), the pioneering and inspirational Afro-Caribbean radical intellectual, dedicated communist, and feminist who is buried in Highgate Cemetery close to Karl Marx. We will be joined by Carole Boyce Davies, Professor of Africana Studies and English at Cornell University and Claudia Jones scholar, author of Left of Karl Marx: The Political Life of Black Communist Claudia Jones (2008) and editor of a reader of Jones’ writing Claudia Jones: Beyond Containment (2010) and artist Rhea Storr, who in her recent film works has investigated carnival as a space of both celebration and protest, exploring their social structures, costume and language.

We are pleased to share the recorded conversation with Carole Boyce Davies and Rhea Storr on our website. The conversation is also accompanied by Rhea Storr’s recent work Bragging Rights (2019).

The history of gin and a ‘virtual’ gin tasting led by Sacred Gin – Online @ online
Jun 26 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Highgate’s own boutique distillery, Sacred Gin, will conduct a remote gin tasting, preceded by a reprise of Ruth Hazeldine’s illustrated history of gin delivered last year at 10A.

Gin samples will be available from Sacred Gin’s new premises in Highgate High Street from June 23rd. Samples will cost £29.95 per person for 5 x 50 ml bottles of various different gins (all Sacred) plus a 50ml sample of Sacred English Dry Vermouth for the Martini, plus a bottle of Fever Tree tonic. There will also be a sheet with some instructions.

Hilary Whitney of Sacred Gin explains: “On the night, each person chooses either Pink Grapefruit Gin or Cardamom Gin to make a G&T with – they should put a tiny amount aside for tasting later – so that they have a drink in their hand when we start.  Ian [Hart] and I will taste through the samples people have given and we will round off the evening with a Martini.”

Participation in this part of the evening will be limited to the first 30 to buy the sample pack.

The talk will begin at 7.00 pm and the tasting at 8.00 pm. To book for the event (whether or not participating in the tasting) click here.
