An exhibition of new films by students from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design Fine Art Foundation responding to Waterlow Park and the LUX Collection.

Online Exhibition: 22 – 26 April on the LUX Website

Launch event: Wednesday 22 April 6pm BST.
Online discussion with the curators, students and tutors on the themes of the exhibition. Register here to attend on Zoom.

Each year LUX hosts students from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design Fine Art Foundation programme to make work responding to and displayed across Waterlow Park in Highgate. Over the past three years the project has brought an extraordinary exhibition of sculpture, painting, performance and film to the park each Spring. This year due to the ongoing lockdown the project is going online with a series of new films produced by the 4D students.

Given LUX’s location within Waterlow Park, which was granted to local people as “a garden for the gardenless”, this year students were asked to respond to the function green spaces play in an urban environment. As a starting point several works that explore the notion of parks and landscape were selected from the LUX collection archive by the 4D tutors as inspiration for the students to consider whilst developing their own observations about the life and use of Waterlow Park and other urban green spaces.

The programme is curated by the 4D curators Eric Arnal, Lara Baksu & Olivia Lopez.

Through an experimental approach the 4D pathway explores the use of time-based media, performance and digital media as artistic mediums. The projects introduce students to a range of practical and critical skills to enable them to examine and critically discuss the impact of pressing contemporary issues on their lives; such as the reliability of the media, data generation and the nature of identity in the twenty-first century. For more information on the course see the Central Saint Martins website.

Green Space includes new films by Martha Burgin, Flo Pawley, Charlotte Wilmont, Vivienne Cohen, Olivia Lopez, Amelie Schlaeffer, Jemimah Ho, Laura Dowell Ballesta, Yonghui Song, Fan Yang, Silje Nordback, Hollis Hui, Fin Sales, Lara Baksu, Yosheved Francis, Frederica Aquaro, Lucy Ellis, Mati Owens-True, Tiffany Tang, Anastasia Glass, Eric Arnal, Jaemin Paek, Emi Horley, Sylvia Cordara, Sam Brooks, Hattie Giles, Rose Draper, Lizzy Alster, Jade Desmond, Fatemeh Sarebannejad, Aleyna Hasoglu, Jo Allen, Zoe Springer.

Ryan Young & Jenn Butterworth @ The Red Hedgehog
Apr 25 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Up And Coming artist of the year’, fiddle player Ryan Young brings new and exciting ideas to traditional Scottish music. He recorded his debut album with triple GRAMMY winner, Jesse Lewis, who has worked with the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and Bela Fleck. Ryan holds both a first class honours and a Masters degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, as well as being a twice in finalist in both the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards and the BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.

Ryan focuses mainly on Scottish music, bringing new life to very old, often forgotten tunes by playing them in his own unique way. He is very influenced by the fiddle playing of County Clare, Ireland and has been fascinated by the playing of renowned fiddlers such as Bobby Casey, Paddy Canny, PJ and Martin Hayes and Tommy Potts from Dublin.

Ryan’s fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision.

Online Discussion: Cinephilia in Lockdown @ LUX

Cinephilia in Lockdown.
A discussion with Girish Shambu and Mike Sperlinger
Thu 7 May 2020 / 6pm GMT

Before the Covid-19 situation the conditions of film viewing and cinephilia had already changed as online streaming and social media occupied an ever more central position in relation to film viewing and discourse. With the lockdown there has been an explosion of new online streaming, analogous film festivals and screenings, while at the same time grieving over the loss of cinema spaces, cinema experience and damage to the already precarious work and structures that enable this. For this online discussion we welcome Girish Shambu and Mike Sperlinger to reflect in this current moment on the future of cinema-going and cinephilic culture, moderated by Benjamin Cook, LUX Director.

Please visit LUX Website to register and attend the discussion on Zoom in advance.

This discussion is organised on the occasion of the UK release of Mike Sperlinger’s book Occasional Criticism or, anacolutha on cinema and its causes available now from the LUX Shop

If you require support to participate in our online events, or have any questions, please let us know by contacting us on events@lux.org.uk and we will be happy to assist.

LUX is dedicated to providing a welcoming online environment for everyone, regardless of gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, or religion or belief. Participants who do not adhere to this code of conduct and the participation guidelines will be asked to leave the event.

Girish Shambu is a critic and cinephile who teaches at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. He has run his film blog since 2004, and his writings have appeared at Film Quarterly, Framework, Film Comment, and the Criterion Collection. Recently, he is the author of the manifesto, “For a New Cinephilia,” at Film Quarterly, where he edits the online column, Quorum. A new and expanded edition of his book The New Cinephilia (caboose books) will be published in 2020.

Mike Sperlinger is currently Professor of Writing & Theory at the Oslo Academy of Fine Art and also teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. Previously he was assistant director of LUX, a London-based agency for artists working with the moving image, for more than 10 years. He has written extensively on contemporary art and is the editor of several publications, including recently Here Is Information. Mobilise – Selected writings by Ian White (2016). His most recent publication is Occasional Criticism, or, anacolutha on cinema and causes (Akademie Schloss Solitude, 2018).

However, he did not know that he would have to share the beach with someone else. Let’s just say Mr Sand’s day was about to be turned upside down and inside out. Caught up in the whirlpool of Mr Sea’s chaos Mr Sand does everything he can to get a bit of peace and quiet. Small adventure. Huge heart. Suitable for ages 3+.

London Eats Out – From Mediaeval Times to Today: Online talk @ online
Jun 1 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Monday 1st June 2020.  7.00 pm.
An illustrated talk by Ruth Hazeldine.

Although we no longer can do so, Londoners have always eaten out. What we now call “Take-Aways” were a feature of London as far back at the 12th century. Fish and chips became our favourite take-away well into the 19th century and the word “restaurant” was not heard until 1816.

We are now restricted to eating in, but it is pleasant to remember when Londoners could eat out!

Face-To-Face Sessions Suspended… But We’re Still Here To Help!
Due to the ongoing health crisis, and inline with government advice, all face-to-face Coffee & Computers sessions are suspended until further notice.
However, we feel it’s hugely important for our community to stay connected, especially as technology can play a big role in helping us get through this difficult time.  So even if we will not be getting together as groups, we will continue to offer help and support to you however we can:
  • Our info@coffeecomputers.org email address is available to answer questions and offer guidance on all matters & issues
  • Our Coronavirus Support page provides links to official support services and local voluntary groups
  • The weekly emails will continue to keep us all in touch and we will aim to also offer handy tips & advice
  • We have compiled a list of useful Resources & Guides, e.g. how to get started with the various communication tools that are available
  • We are investigating various technologies whereby one-to-one help could be offered using via online video & audio calls
In these unprecedented times, it is very hard to know what will be around the corner. Neighbourhoods & communities are beginning to come together to support & help those who need assistance. Given the role that communications technology plays in the modern world, Coffee & Computers has the potential to play an important part in helping individuals access resources and maintain contact.
Learners: Look out for our update emails, and further “how-to” guides for other online applications and resources.  As always, if you need help getting started, have a specific technical issue, or would like help finding/contacting local Coronavirus support services or voluntary groups please do use the info@coffeecomputers.org email address,  and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Volunteers: Please let us know if you are available to assist with any of these initiatives, or if you have any comments or suggestions.

Flute recital by Andy Martin – Online concert @ Online
Jun 7 @ 8:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Flute recital by Andy Martin - Online concert @ Online

I will be presenting a highly varied programme of solo flute repertoire including some standard works by Debussy, CPE Bach and Eugene Bozza whilst also including lesser known pieces by Wil Offermans and Nicholas Maw. I will also be premiering a new work that I have commissioned for this recital which is a set of variations written on an original theme by Poulenc. The theme, written for solo flute, is a rare gem in the flute repertoire, seldom performed due to it’s short duration, however the set of variations on the theme extends the beauty of Poulenc’s writing and should be a real highlight of the recital.

I consider myself very lucky in the respect that I have access to a beautiful venue at Jackson’s Lane Arts Centre in Highgate, so am able to present the performance from a unique and atmospheric space rather than from my own home. I am very excited to present this recital and would love to be able to share it with as many people as I can.

I am hoping to also use the performance as an opportunity to raise money, replacing funds that I have lost due to cancelled work during this difficult period. I will be inviting donations towards this cause with a share of the proceeds also going towards supporting the NHS and Jacksons Lane as a venue who are also struggling in this uncertain time.

The link below should allow people to register interest in the event should they have a Facebook Account. However, this link will also direct you to the live video on Sunday even if you do not have a Facebook Account.
