KAREN LOADER’s artistic interests centre around the differences and similarities between place and space. She sees place as somewhere real and tangible, that can be experienced through the senses, and space as something abstract that is felt rather than observed. Her work explores the transition from one to the other and how both are inevitably intertwined.
Her artistic process begins with walking around a place and documenting it photographically, noting things such as architectural shapes, the textures of walls, the odd juxtapositions of objects and the colours that stand out. For this exhibition, she explored her local neighbourhood – the area between Holloway and Highgate, taking in the back streets and alleyways that branch off the A1 carriageway. Moving through a place physically helps her to construct a rhythmic interpretation of it and, when combined with focused observations, the character or personality of the place starts to emerge. This is a purely subjective act and the outcomes can vary depending on the place and her perception of it.
Back in the studio, she works with these elements of rhythm and observation taking them into intuitive drawings that play with spatial divisions and colour variations. The final stage is to scale up these two processes into larger paintings that hopefully retain some of the mood of the place in which she started. Her aim is to convey an atmosphere of place that can act as a trigger for memory and association and encourage the viewer towards a more contemplative reading of the work.
She often works within the set parameters of a grid format which allows for infinite possibilities to explore spatial and structural juxtapositions, but she is always looking for the moments when the mathematical harmony is disrupted by a slippage in symmetry. Her use of a muted colour palette in thin layers of acrylic paint adds to a sense of disorientation as the eye struggles to focus on a particular point and the mind jumps from shape to shape as it attempts to make connections. Colour plays an important part in creating both the harmony and the disruption of space and is strongly related to the original starting point of a place.
Karen has lived in Holloway for over 25 years. She studied sculpture and installation at the University of East London graduating in 1999. She is currently studying for an MA in Fine Art at The City & Guilds of London Art School. Her work has been widely exhibited since 2002 and she has curated a number of exhibitions in the UK and abroad.

Highgate councillors hold a surgery at Jacksons Lane on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings, and at the HLSI (Highgate Literary and Scientific Society, South Grove, Pond Square) on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings. There is no surgery on 5th Saturdays.
Councillors’ surgeries provide the opportunity for a constituent to meet one of his/her councillors face-to-face. The purpose is usually to discuss and hopefully to help resolve a local or personal issue in which Haringey council has or could have a role. Meeting at a surgery can be particularly useful when there are numerous documents relevant to the issue. Surgeries are normally held in the cafe or foyer area of Jacksons Lane theatre, but a private space is available if required. No booking is needed.

St Joseph’s are especially delighted to celebrate the opening of the Market with the School’s 10th anniversary in September of the ‘St Joseph’s Children’s Garden’ project, enabling children in the Community to sell their garden produce and share their growing expertise.
Produce will include; Freshly pressed juice, soft fruit and top fruit in season, vegetables and salads. Organic & free range meat, raw milk, cheese, plants & flowers, handmade preserves, herbs, pies, cakes and bread, wet fish and shellfish, free range eggs.
Something for everyone.
All farms are based within 100 miles of London and everyone is visited before they sell with us. Secondary producers such as jam makers have to use a minimum of 50% local ingredients and we ask bakers to use seasonal ingredients and free range/organic eggs. We’ll do our best to include locally based producers, anyone interested should get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Adriana vasques is a london based singer, pianist and composer. She graduated in classical piano in trieste, her italian hometown on the adriatic coast.
She has performed extensively in italy, slovenia and croatia at many well established venues and festivals, singing in jazz, pop and funk bands before choosing to perform mainly her brazilian song repertoire and her own compositions. Adriana has performed and recorded in italy with reputable musicians such as andrea allione (paolo conte), pietro tonolo (paul motian, gil evans orchestra), glauco venier (kenny wheeler, norma winstone), elvis stanić (gilberto gil, django bates), luis bonilla (mingus big band, lester bowie) as well as many others.
Alongside her performing career, she has also worked as a music tutor and radio host. For over twenty years she has produced and hosted several music radio shows in which she has welcomed and embraced a variety of musical styles , interviewed dozens of musicians as well as other professionals in the musical world .
After defending her graduation thesis on five of her compositions in relation to rhythmic didactics, one of her compositions, nu-mi (danza), was awarded first prize at “ premio nazionale delle arti “ in rome and has since been recorded by other musicians in three different albums. Adriana has started performing her own compositions recently.
After moving to london in 2009, she toured europe and canada with the irish cult band the commitments , over the past few years she has performed with some of the best musicians on the london scene.

Roger was a late starter as a musician playing his first concert aged 28. He was one of the founding members of the Chevalier Brothers in the 1980s and played about 1,000 gigs all over the world with them. He then signed to Acid Jazz Records and started releasing highly regarded solo albums under the name of The Beaujolais Band & Vibraphonic. With Vibraphonic he had a number one hit on the US jazz charts and as a result he was signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records in LA and released two albums for them. Since 2000 Roger has concentrated on more acoustic jazz. Roger has played with most of the top jazz musicians in the UK along with Slim Gaillard, Pee Wee Ellis and others. Roger has also been prolific in the studio working on albums for many pop artists including Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Roni Size, Kirsty MacColl, Morrissey, Fairground Attraction, Rumer, Duffy, Alison Limerick, Alexander O’Neal, Omara Portuondo, Ed Motta, Shola Ama and many others.
In a blindfold test the main man of vibes Gary Burton thought that Beaujolais was ‘one of the top vibes players of the USA’. Favouring the music of 70s New York and writers like Bobby Hutcherson. McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter, as well as his own material with dryly humourous titles like Joe Beam and Mr Non PC, this is a near perfect band of great players whose sole aim is to give us ‘a couple of hours of seriously inventive improvisation’ based on great tunes, understated grooves and swing

Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, the third of his three surviving operas, rightly occupies an elevated position in the history of the genre. It is a masterpiece of text setting and musical invention, at a time when opera as we know it today was very new, and certainly not performed in anything like the same way. Monteverdi was blessed to be able to set a particularly fine libretto, written Giovanni Busenello, perhaps the first great opera librettist, and Da Ponte’s literary forefather.
For HGO, performing this wonderful work is a very important milestone, particularly given that we coincide with the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth. Indeed, we will be performing it on Monteverdi’s exact birthday, Thursday 18th May. This production also marks the first time that HGO will perform an opera in its original language (other than English), together with the first time that we will perform with surtitles. This is an indication of our pledge as a training opera company to give our singers a complete experience of performing opera, as well as giving our audiences a presentation of this work with not only the authentic music, but also the authentic text.
HGO will be joined by an array of period instruments for Poppea; two harpsichords, chamber organ, two theorbos, viola da gamba, violone and violins. This promises to be a vibrant and exciting production of one of the greatest works of art of the seventeenth century, and one not to be missed.

Highgate councillors hold a surgery at the HLSI (Highgate Literary and Scientific Society, 11 South Grove, Pond Square) on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings, and at Jacksons Lane on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings. There is no surgery on 5th Saturdays.
Councillors’ surgeries provide the opportunity for a constituent to meet one of his/her councillors face-to-face. The purpose is usually to discuss and hopefully to help resolve a local or personal issue in which Haringey council has or could have a role. Meeting at a surgery can be particularly useful when there are numerous documents relevant to the issue. Surgeries are normally held in the members’ reading room of the HLSI, but a private space is available if required. No booking is needed.

A new weekly Sunday farmers market for the community.
We’re delighted to be hosted by St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
St Joseph’s are especially delighted to celebrate the opening of the Market with the School’s 10th anniversary in September of the ‘St Joseph’s Children’s Garden’ project, enabling children in the Community to sell their garden produce and share their growing expertise.
Produce will include; Freshly pressed juice, soft fruit and top fruit in season, vegetables and salads. Organic & free range meat, raw milk, cheese, plants & flowers, handmade preserves, herbs, pies, cakes and bread, wet fish and shellfish, free range eggs.
Something for everyone.
All farms are based within 100 miles of London and everyone is visited before they sell with us. Secondary producers such as jam makers have to use a minimum of 50% local ingredients and we ask bakers to use seasonal ingredients and free range/organic eggs. We’ll do our best to include locally based producers, anyone interested should get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Adriana vasques is a london based singer, pianist and composer. She graduated in classical piano in trieste, her italian hometown on the adriatic coast.
She has performed extensively in italy, slovenia and croatia at many well established venues and festivals, singing in jazz, pop and funk bands before choosing to perform mainly her brazilian song repertoire and her own compositions. Adriana has performed and recorded in italy with reputable musicians such as andrea allione (paolo conte), pietro tonolo (paul motian, gil evans orchestra), glauco venier (kenny wheeler, norma winstone), elvis stanić (gilberto gil, django bates), luis bonilla (mingus big band, lester bowie) as well as many others.
Alongside her performing career, she has also worked as a music tutor and radio host. For over twenty years she has produced and hosted several music radio shows in which she has welcomed and embraced a variety of musical styles , interviewed dozens of musicians as well as other professionals in the musical world .
After defending her graduation thesis on five of her compositions in relation to rhythmic didactics, one of her compositions, nu-mi (danza), was awarded first prize at “ premio nazionale delle arti “ in rome and has since been recorded by other musicians in three different albums. Adriana has started performing her own compositions recently.
After moving to london in 2009, she toured europe and canada with the irish cult band the commitments , over the past few years she has performed with some of the best musicians on the london scene.
