Mozart Mass in C Minor K427 @ All Hallows Church
Nov 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Works written for two very different occasions form the opening concert in Highgate Choral Society’s 2017-2018 season. Following the recovery from illness of his fiancée, Constanze Weber, Mozart promised to write a mass of thanksgiving. Although it was never completed the Mass in C minor was premièred, in its incomplete state, with Constanze as one of the soprano soloists, in Salzburg on 26th October 1783 and harks back to the Baroque world of Handel and Bach.
Originally commissioned by the Polish-born art collector Bronislaw Krystall to write a requiem commemorating his wife’s death, Karol Szymanowski decided to change the contract and instead composed what is considered to be his greatest masterpiece. The inspiration for his Stabat Mater was the tragic death of his niece, Alinka and the subsequent suffering of his pregnant sister, who was soon to lose another child. Completed in 1926, Stabat Mater is of fundamental importance in the history of Polish music after Chopin.

jazz in the house

Georgia Mancio (vocals), Guillermo Rozenthuler (vocals / guitar), Arnie Somogyi (bass), Dave Ohm (drums)

The multi lingual singer Georgia Mancio has risen through a veritable forest of singers to become one of the UK’s most subtle and impressive artists whether performing classic standards or songs from Italy, Spain and Portugal.  Originally from Argentina, Guillermo has been described by Mark Murphy as “someone who rocked me with his amazing swinging versatility” For Georgia, who presented her co-written Songbook album with the legendary pianist Alan Broadbent all over Europe last Spring, this will be a contrast in style with the music of Cuba, Brazil and Chile to banish those early winter blues.  Don’t miss this, our London Jazz Festival show.

The Lauderdale House Cafe will be open from 6pm serving sausage rolls, frittata, cheese tarts, cakes and other light snacks along with a selection of teas, Illy coffee, wines, beers, including Peroni, Camden Pale Ale, London Pride, Aspall Cyder and Luscombe organic soft drinks.

Meditative Walk on the Heath, by Aimee Birnbaum

PRINTMAKERS INC.     OPEN & CLOSED SPACES     an exhibition of Original Prints and their processes

“Open & Closed Spaces” refers to the breadth of the locality – the area of almost rural calm within a city – which is the view from Highgate so enjoyed by Coleridge. The title also refers to the surfaces in printmaking of the plate or matrix when bitten, scraped, burnished, painted, inked or wiped.

Printmakers Inc. was formed in 2010 with a pop-up shop in Woburn Place, supported by Camden Council. Since then this group has expanded and shown in a number of Affordable Art Fairs in Hampstead.

The group works in a variety of printmaking media including: etching, drypoint, mono print, collagraphy, solar plate, photo/transfer etching and screenprint.

The group will exhibit their work, and their ways of practice, to create a lively and engaging show in the Gallery at HLSI.

Drop-in Printmaking on Saturday 25th November, 2-4pm.
Members of the public are invited to create their own prints fitting with the title “Open & Closed Spaces”. Places are free but are offered on a first-come basis. Participants should bring their own protective clothing but all other materials are provided.

Laughter, Fun, Games, Improvisation, Meditation, and Connection 🙂 Ho Ho Ha Ha

Laugh, Play, socialise and make new friends. Join us for our optional after Laugh Social where the conversation and laughter will continue to flow.

An hour of rib tickling deep belly laughter including child like playfulness, gibberish, improvisation, complete nonsense, meditation and dancing!!! followed by a Social at a local cafe or park.

Maximum 4 tickets per person.

Tickets on the day subject to availability £10.00 This week we are in the Upper Hall

For larger Group bookings please contact us for info and rates.

In a nutshell

Laughter yoga is a practice involving prolonged voluntary laughter along with breathing techniques that originate from Yoga. We usually laugh for between 3-5 seconds, in a laughter yoga session we will laugh for between 10-15 minutes, of deep belly laughter. This is the type of laughter that gives us all the health benefits and the benefits will remain with us for a good 24 hours after the session! The body reacts in the same way whether the laughter is forced or natural, releasing the endorphin’s (happy hormones). It is these endorphin’s that kick in and fight stress, boost our immune system and make us feel good in so many ways. Laughter yoga is experienced in groups, with eye contact, yogic breathing and playfulness between participants. All that is required of the participants is a Willingness to Laugh!

We sometimes have an Optional Social at a cafe after the workshop.

Stay as long or as short as you like. A chance to continue with conversation and laughter amongst new friends in a nearby cafe or pub.

What to bring

Wear something you are comfortable to move in and we will probably lie on the floor for a short ending mediation at some point! so if you like bring a Yoga/Camping Mat and cushion or you could roll your coat up and improvise! Bring some water or purchase from the bar. Laughter is thirsty work!

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

Laughter Yoga is not a substitute for medical consultation for physical, mental and psychological illnesses, but is a powerful natural complementary form of healing. It is like any other aerobic exercise and may not be suitable for everyone as it involves some physical strain and a rise in intra-abdominal pressure.

Some people may have pre- existing medical conditions and one should take reasonable precaution before doing laughter exercises or indeed any form of exercise.

It is contraindicated for people suffering from: Any kind of hernia, Heart disease with angina pain, Persistent cough with breathlessness, Uncontrolled high blood pressure, Incontinence of urine, Epilepsy, Advanced (bleeding) piles and haemorrhoids or any bleeding tendencies in any part of the body, Severe backache, Any acute symptoms of cough, cold and fever. People who have undergone major surgery should wait at least three months before doing Laughter Yoga.

If in doubt first consult a medical professional for guidance. Anyone undergoing physician-prescribed therapy that experiences improvements through laughter should seek the advice of their doctor before reducing dosage or stopping treatment.
