Night Fishing In Ugljan – New Paintings by DANNY ISRAEL @ Highgate Gallery
Jun 13 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Night Fishing in Ugljan (which continues until 22 June) is a series of 38 paintings which arose out of a trip to the island of Uglijan, in Croatia, where Danny Israel watched the fishermen use powerful lights to attract the fish to the surface.

These paintings follow the stream of life, from microscopic forms to larger sea mammals, as they emerge from the deep. It seemed there was a symbolism to this event, which it might be possible to approach in paint. As it turned out this experience proved to be an infinite source of wonder at the drama beneath the surface.

These acrylic images are achieved by liberal use of the same medium, water, but Danny also wanted to create surfaces which in themselves are visually engaging, which arrest the attention, which detain the eye and which invoke the imagination.

Danny Israel studied Fine Art at the University of Wales (Cardiff). His first exhibition was at Reading Museum in 1972 and he then exhibited annually at The Beecroft Gallery in Southend on Sea, Essex between 1972 and 1980. He has work in various collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum Print Department and that of Elton John, and has exhibited occasionally over the intervening years.

After a successful auction in 2014 he returned to exhibiting with a sell-out exhibition at the Babylon Gallery in Ely, and more recently at Highgate Contemporary Art. This exhibition at HLSI is his third in the current series, and is much the largest.

Coffee and Computers at Highgate School @ Highgate School Library - main entrance opposite The Gatehouse Pub
Jun 16 @ 4:05 pm – 5:30 pm

Would you like a bit of friendly help with your phone, laptop or tablet? Just head to the Highgate School Library for an afternoon of free, informal one-to-one computer familiarisation sessions over a nice cup of coffee. We do tea as well. And cake!

If you don’t yet possess any electronic gadgets, don’t worry, we do and we’d love you to come and play with them.

“This is so wonderful! It’s easy – when you know how! Thank you” says 75 year old Highgate Coffee & Computers friend, who has just worked out how to move all his pictures from his phone to his tablet.

If you want more info, give Stuart a call on 020 8347 2411 (quoting Highgate Coffee & Computers). You can also email us on highgatecoffeeandcomputers@gmail.com to tell us what you want to know more about.

Please note the volunteers at these sessions are pupils from the school, ranging in age from 11 to 18 years old.  The School has a duty of care to these young people and would be very grateful if you could be mindful of maintaining appropriate interaction with them. Please consider issues such as your language, your expectations regarding the type of matter you raise with the pupils, and the sort of information that the pupils may see on your documents or particular webpages.

If you have any queries then please don’t hesitate to raise them with the members of staff at the session.

If you plan to come, it would be helpful to know, though it is not obligatory.

Warm regards

The Highgate Coffee & Computers volunteers

Highgate Hill Farmers Market @ St Joseph's Catholic Primary School
Jun 18 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Highgate Hill Farmers Market @ St Joseph's Catholic Primary School | London | England | United Kingdom

A new weekly Sunday farmers market for the community.

We’re delighted to be hosted by St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.

St Joseph’s are especially delighted to celebrate the opening of the Market with the School’s 10th anniversary in September of the ‘St Joseph’s Children’s Garden’ project, enabling children in the Community to sell their garden produce and share their growing expertise.

Produce will include; Freshly pressed juice, soft fruit and top fruit in season, vegetables and salads.  Organic & free range meat, raw milk, cheese, plants & flowers, handmade preserves, herbs, pies, cakes and bread, wet fish and shellfish, free range eggs.

Something for everyone.

All farms are based within 100 miles of London and everyone is visited before they sell with us. Secondary producers such as jam makers have to use a minimum of 50% local ingredients and we ask bakers to use seasonal ingredients and free range/organic eggs. We’ll do our best to include locally based producers, anyone interested should get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Will Todd Mass in Blue @ St. Michael's Church
Jul 1 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
When the first recording of   Mass in Blue was released in 2006, MusicWeb International ended its review thus: “Choral singers and directors on the lookout for enriching their choir’s choice should get this, as should anyone who appreciates a well-themed piece of sung music that brings off the balance between accessibility and sustained creative delight.” Premièred in 2003,   Mass in Blue, scored for soprano solo, choir, piano, bass and drum kit, has gone on to receive performances throughout the world.
Perhaps this will happen to   Two or Three Angels too? To complement the Mass, Highgate Choral Society has commissioned an exciting new work for soprano and double choir from “one of the brightest young talents to emerge in recent years”, Russell Hepplewhite (Evening Standard Top 1000 most influential Londoners). Consisting of 12 movements,   Two or Three Angels sets to music poetry by William Blake, Rabindranath Tagore, Emily Dickinson, W B Yeats, Stephen Crane, James Henry Leigh Hunt, John Keats and Henry van Dyke. 1 July 2017 will be its first performance.
Pre-concert conversation with Russell Hepplewhite at 6.20pm.

Mondays @ the Mills: The geography of wine

3 July 2017

The geography of wine

Phil Harrison, Highgate School
It is often remarked that wine is ‘geography in a bottle’ – that it is a fundamental reflection of the place in which it is grown. This discussion will examine some of the factors that influence global viticulture, concentrating on the great wine regions of France and Spain as well as those in the New World. There will be consideration of soils, climate and topography, as well as that quintessentially French concept of terroir.

Talks take place on Mondays at 7pm in the AV Room in the Mills Centre. Refreshments, including wine, are available from 6.30 pm and afterwards.
