What is the Soundtrack of your life?

A playful evening of vocal performance with boundary-pushing singers Eleanor Westbrook and Oskar McCarthy, celebrating the radical spirit of 20th and 21st-century vocal music.

The programme explores pioneering works by Cage, Xenakis, and Aperghis, alongside daring reinterpretations of older music and contemporary works from both established and emerging composers. Featuring Ben Smith on piano, plus a balloon and a toy glockenspiel.

Eleanor Westbrook is an expressive interdisciplinary performer working at the intersection of opera, physical theatre, clowning, and experimental music. She has appeared across the UK and Europe, from the Edinburgh Fringe to Southbank Centre, and collaborated with companies such as Belarus Free Theatre, Waste Paper Opera Company, and Kneehigh Theatre. Her original works have been featured at Soho Theatre’s Fool’s Moon and the De La Warr Pavilion. Known for her visceral energy and surrealist storytelling, Eleanor is committed to reimagining classical forms through a contemporary lens. She is artistic director of TUFT, producing large-scale performance events in Hastings Castle and Caves, and is currently developing a multidisciplinary production of Titus Andronicus.

Oskar McCarthy is a dynamic actor-singer performing new music and old music in new ways. He has premiered operas by Avner Dorman, Robert Reid Allan and Bertie Baigent, and commissioned new work including Laura Bowler’s Lines, Letters and Disinformation for baritone and tape, performed at Snape Maltings and Café OTO. He has recorded works by Meredith Monk and Ion Marmarinos, improvised operatic monologues with composer/violist Zeo Fawcett, and collaborated with Rufus Elliot on durational six-hour vocal installations. A VOICEBOX alumnus, he trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and recently worked with the Royal Opera House’s Opera Lab, part of the Jette Parker Programme. He is co-Artistic Director of Festival Voices, performing at venues including Kings Place, Bold Tendencies, and Southbank Centre.

Our children’s art classes run on a termly basis, providing children aged 5-8 with an introduction to the basics of drawing and painting.

Each week children will build on their skills learnt in previous weeks, developing their confidence and ability.

Sunday Fun-day Workshop

Our family workshops are designed to share the history of Lauderdale House!

These relaxed, drop-in workshops are perfect for children aged 4 – 10 and include tactile and sensory activities, as well as crafts related to specific periods in Lauderdale House’s history. For September, we’re celebrating our local landmarks – you’ll get to learn about all the amazing buildings that surround us and sketch them to create a collaborative city-scape collage. You’ll also have the chance to discover the architecture of Lauderdale House, from our Tudor beams and fireplaces, to our Georgian ceiling décor – there’s almost 500 years to explore!

Please note all children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

Family Trail: A Walk Back in Time

Learn more about Lauderdale House with your family at this free self-guided trail.

Spot the Tudor beams, find the frog in the Long Gallery ceiling and discover the story of the dog who saved the House. This free trail is designed to be followed at your own pace and can be picked up from the Lower Gallery. The first 50 of children who complete the trail will receive a chocolate treat.

The Casimir Connection performs a blend of original modern classical music and chamber jazz, presenting music that is truly unique: uplifting music reminiscent of Steve Reich and Karl Jenkins, with vibrant contemporary jazz improvisation.

Diane McLoughlin (composer, arranger and saxophones) has had decades of experience as a performer and composer, including her 18-piece big band Giant Steppes. She currently plays with and writes for the award winning jazz quintet, ARQ. The other members of the group are outstanding musicians and improvisors. Alcyona Mick is a renowned jazz pianist, known for her work with Tori Freestone and Natacha Atlas. Kit Massey plays regularly with the Hot Club of Jupiter and the BBC Concert Orchestra and is a teacher at Trinity Laban. Tim Fairhall performs in a variety of genres including the James Patrick Gavin and the John Martin Quartet.

With The Casimir Connection, the emphasis is on emotional expression and storytelling, and audiences in the past have said they found the music moving, inspirational and cinematic.

Caliban Sounds in association with One Little independent Records recently released their second album, Reflection, which has received very positive reviews.

Matthew Wright from Jazz Journal described it as “an impressive album that warrants repeated listening.”
Nick Lea from Jazz Views said it was a …“fine album from an ensemble that is truly bringing a new perspective on classical chamber composition and contemporary jazz and does so with a genuine sense of adventure”.
Jazzwise commented “there’s serenity and optimism..all delivered with virtuosic commitment”. (July 2024)
Mojo recently gave the album four stars and mentioned “brooding, folkloric pieces” and “rhythmic verve”. (August 2024)
