Ben Crosland Brass Group @ Lauderdale House
Nov 15 @ 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm

with Steve Lodev (keyboards), Steve Waterman & Martin Shaw (tpts,), Mark Nightingale & Barnaby Dickinson (tmbs)

Ben Crosland, acoustic and electric bass player, is based in Yorkshire and assembled this premier-league brass section to realise a commission from the 2011 Marsden Jazz Festival, inspired by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, An Open Place. The compositions are inspired by specific pieces, such as Henry Moore’s Reclining Figures, and Barbara Hepworth’s Family of Man, the whole composition is suffused with the gentle, pastoral quality of the Park. A project like this would be easy meat for a classical brass group, but here the fascination is how some of the most technically-brilliant brassmen of the jazz world preserve the excitement of jazz, spontaneity and creativity without ‘raising the roof’, which in other circumstances they could easily do.

Marx and the Village Community @ The Chapel at Highgate Cemetery
May 1 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

In this lecture, Professor Gareth Stedman Jones looks at the last decade and a half of Marx’s life, a period in which he effectively gave up further work on Capital and read up instead on the village community and the early history of man. He was interested in particular in the new work on pre-history which developed from the 1860s onwards connecting this with a notion of primitive communism and an epoch in history before patriarchy and political hierarchy.

Professor Gareth Stedman Jones is Director of the Centre for History and Economics, Cambridge, and a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge University since 1974. He was Professor of Political Science, History Faculty, Cambridge University from 1997 and in 2010 became Professor of the History of Ideas at Queen Mary, University of London. His publications include An End to Poverty? (2004), a long introduction to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, The Communist Manifesto (2002), and The Cambridge History of Nineteenth-Century Political Thought, co-edited with Gregory Claeys, 2011.

He is currently working on an intellectual biography of Marx commissioned by Penguin and a more general work on political thought between the French Revolution and the Revolutions of 1848.

Doors open at 7pm and wine and nibbles will be served. The talk starts promptly at 7.30pm and will last about an hour.

Tickets are non-refundable but, as a courtesy to others, please let us know if you cannot attend.

Mon
Eight week Mindfulness Programme at Jacksons Lane @ Jacksons Lane
Apr 4 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

What is Mindfulness?

‘Mindfulness’ is at the very heart of meditational practice and trains us to focus on the present moment. This allows us to gain insight into mental patterns that sometimes cause negative emotions. We also learn, through experience what it means to spend less time with our thoughts and spend more time in our bodies enjoying life. It can be practiced by people from all walks of life and is becoming more and more popular as a means of psychological treatment. There is now a strong evidence base demonstrating that it can be very beneficial for those experiencing depression and anxiety, as well as many other conditions. Mindfulness allows us to make friends with our thinking mind making us less vulnerable to negative mental activity. Such practice can bring about a deep sense of inner peace and a fresh acceptance of reality itself.

The Eight Sessions

This new and innovative group will take place over eight weekly sessions, each of 2-hours duration and covers the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation, applied theory and practice. Some aspects of CBT will also be used within the course syllabus where required to help group members to deal with dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviours. This specific group has been successfully taught in several London universities and also within the NHS. This group will help you to:

  • improve your focus and concentration levels
  • lower bodily stress and increase relaxation
  • explore how your mind works
  • explore how your mind habitually creates unhealthy thought processes and worry
  • help you to prevent the arising of depressive moods before they spiral
  • achieve a robust and healthy mind, accepting reality and the world around you
  • work towards acceptance of unhealthy emotions
  • achieve a deep sense of calm, patience and stillness
  • grow and mature as a true human being and explore what it means to be ‘me’

This will be particularly helpful for those people experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, attention problems or any condition involving a fast-thinking anxious mind.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Commitment to the full x8 weekly sessions is imperative, as is the diligent undertaking of daily life meditation tasks between sessions. Only those people who are willing to make the commitment and complete the between session tasks should attend.   Places are limited to ensure a high quality of client support. This course is open to everyone but attendance must be booked in advance and approved by the course leader before the beginning of the programme. All attendees must be 18+ with any exceptions discussed prior to the beginning of the course.

Eight week Mindfulness Programme at Jacksons Lane @ Jacksons Lane
May 9 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Sun
Swish and Style @ Jacksons Lane
Mar 26 @ 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm

Tired of your t-shirts? Wish you had some different dresses? Save money by bringing along your unwanted (but wearable) clothes to our Swish and Style event and go home with a new-to-you outfit, all for free!

It’s simple. Have a clear out and bring good quality clothes to one of our seven events. For each item you bring, you get a token that you can exchange for another garment (maximum 10 items). Everything is free, everything is clean and everything will be re-worn and re-loved.

How it works

For the first hour (12.30 – 1.30), everyone is invited to drop off their clothes, shoes and accessories that they want to donate. Whilst we busily sort them into style and hang them on hangers, you’ll be free to check out the workshops – learning how to do simple fixes to your clothes and how to upcycle them into something completely different – a jumper becomes a hot water bottle cover, a treasured Babygro becomes a patchwork memory blanket and an old t-shirt becomes a bag. If you have any clothes that need a little TLC, bring them along and our seamstress can fix them for you for free while you wait.

The from 2pm until 3pm, you get to look through all the clothes and choose what you want. If you love it, take it. It’s first come, first served – but no elbows please!

What can you bring?

Please bring along:

  • Clean and wearable clothes, shoes and accessories
  • No damage, holes and stains
  • You can bring women’s, men’s, children’s and baby clothes
  • No underwear please, unless in sealed, unworn condition

Anything that we deem unacceptable will be given back to you and you will not be given a token. We have the right to turn away any item.

Please note only adults will be allowed at events. Parents with children under the age of 12 can bring them but they must remain under the parents’ supervision at all times.

Any clothes that are left over at the end of the event will be donated to the Salvation Army.
