kofi/barnes aggregation
thursday 1 june
With John Turville | piano, Adam King | bass
Rod Youngs |drums
Now here’s a mouth watering prospect, two of the most accomplished and exciting saxophone players anywhere, coming together from very different backgrounds. This exiting new band showcases the contrasting alto saxophone talents of the co-leaders. Kofi is a heavier toned, blues drenched wailer of the Jackie McLean School, whilst Barnes has taken the lighter, crisply articulated phrasing of Art Pepper as his guiding light. Put the two different approaches together and the chemistry is instantly explosive, producing some of the most committed, yet accessible, hard swinging music around.
Barnes, arguably the UK’s most popular jazz musician, has had a career which has taken in every aspect of mainstream jazz from Humphrey Lytelton to composing musical theatre with the late Alan P. Plater and innumerable commisions for all kinds of Big Bands. Kofi, after studying at Berklee’s famous jazz conservatory, has played with many of the world’s leading jazz musicians such as Donald Byrd and Eddie Henderson. His own groups have won BBC and Parliamentary Jazz Awards…..and he is one of the few jazz players to have been nominated for a MOBO Award. The rhythm section is ‘new generation’ sparky and it should be an evening of genuine surprises.
wilde roses
Wilde Roses is an early music collaboration between singers, multi-instrumentalists, composers, dancers and performers Anna Tam and Emily Alice Ovenden who met whilst they were performing with the Mediaeval Baebes.
Musically and visually inspired by the medieval and renaissance world, we draw our repertoire from illuminated manuscripts, courtly song books, Elizabethan broadside ballads and the folk tradition. Fascinated by the stories in these songs – medieval religious imagery so beautifully infused with nature; renaissance tales of piracy, jilted lovers and general folly alongside some of the most sincere and tender love songs that reach to the heart of life and human relationships.
Anna Tam (musical director, singer, nyckelharpa, viola da gamba, hurdy gurdy player, percussion) enjoys and eclectic career both in the folk and classical genres. She trained as a classical singer and instrumentalist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During her early studies, she performed at the Wigmore Hall and on BBC Radio 3 and has been touring internationally since she was 15.
Emily Alice Ovenden (singer, recorders, percussion) received a scholarship from Andrew Lloyd Webber to study in London. With the Mediaeval Baebes she has made several albums, and recorded themes for BBC TV shows Victoria and Elizabeth. Emily made 3 acclaimed albums with her band PYTHIA and has recorded vocals for multi platinum selling band Dragonforce.

See Waterlow Park like you’ve never seen it before through the expert eyes of local historian Pam Cooper, who wrote the definitive history book on the Park.
In 1889 Waterlow Park was given as a ‘garden for the gardenless’ but it was a long journey from the Tudor nobles who claimed the area for country residences until the Victorian Sir Sydney Waterlow brought it together in a grand act of philanthropy.
