The Friends of Waterlow Park are holding their annual meeting in the Park Centre on Wednesday 10 June from 7 – 9, with refreshments available from 6.45. The speaker will be Shaun Kiddell, formerly Head of Parks for Camden and now Parks Policy Adviser for the Heritage Lottery Fund. He will talk about the role of the HLF in saving Britain’s parks. Mark returns to the place where he first started to perform in public, a red wooden shed in Wakefield, the Labour Club, to celebrate the club’s 50th birthday.
Interviewing old friends and comrades Mark pieces together the club’s history and works with the club to campaign with some of the poorest workers in the country for their rights.
It is the story of the battle for hope and the survival of a community in a small wooden shed.
It is part theatre, part stand up, part journalism, part activism and returns to Mark’s obsessions of community and struggle.
The show will involve the audience (in a nice way) to help recreate the shed and its inhabitants.

A small, friendly Christmas fair set in the beautiful surroundings of Highgate’s Literary & Scientific Institution offering a wide range of antiques and local crafts as well as items from Indie Books (publishers of From Syria With Love), culinary crafts from Kitchen Provisions, hand-made cards from Save Me I’m Wild, children’s clothing from Olive Pip Clothing plus jewellery and textiles from Antonia Graham.
For food-lovers, there will be a Cookbook Swap Shop where you can bring a cookbook from home and swap it for a new one, wine tasting and a literary-themed pop-up Cafe serving cakes, sweets and snacks such as Proust’s Madeleines, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Apple Pie, Walt Whitman’s Coffee Cake, Sausage Rolls from Harry Potter and Turkish Delight from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. For children, there will be a Scavenger Hunt (with goodie bags from Rude Health’s new kids’ range) and a Craft Room where they can create hand-made Christmas cards themed around well known Christmas books.
Tony Leach, Director of Parks for London, will be talking about ‘Parks in London: ‘The Current Dilemma’ at 7 p.m. in the Park Centre. Join the Friends of Waterlow Park at 6.45 for refreshments. The talk will be followed at 8 p.m. by the AGM. This will include a report on recent developments and elections to the committee.
