Highgate Choral Society sings Kodaly Missa Brevis @ St. Michael's Church
May 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Throughout 2017 the 50th anniversary of the death of Hungarian composer Zoltan Kódaly is being marked. In 1945, while hiding with his wife and many others in the cellar of the Budapest Opera House during the Nazi occupation, he completed his Missa Brevis, which had originally been an organ mass. Its first performance was in the cloakroom of the Opera House, later receiving its official première at the 1948 Three Choirs Festival in Worcester.
By the time of this concert Highgate Choral Society will have been on its tenth tour abroad, to Naples, Sorrento and Pompeii, where they will have performed sacred and secular pieces by Finzi, Mascagni, Puccini, Rossini, Vaughan Williams and Verdi, as well as Campion, Palestrina and Tallis.
The soloist in the Missa Brevis will be young soprano Iúnó Connolly, who will also sing a selection of English and Italian songs accompanied by organist Edward Batting.

2018 marks the centenary of the birth of composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein, whose most famous scores include West Side Story, On the Town, Candide and On the Waterfront.

Commissioned from Bernstein by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral for the 1965 Southern Cathedrals Festival, the Chichester Psalms received its UK premiere on 31st July 1965 and has gone on to become a highly popular staple of choral societies to this day. Consisting of three short movements, the Chichester Psalms is sung in Hebrew.

Our programme of 20th- and 21st-century compositions is completed with choral works by Janacek, Morten Lauridsen and Vaughan Williams.

Linda and John Jenkins: THRESHOLDS. @ Highgate Gallery
Jun 9 @ 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

Linda and John Jenkins: THRESHOLDS.  8-24 June 2018

Nature forms the basis of both Linda’s and John’s work, but their approach in style and medium is very different, resulting in a varied and evocative show.

Linda’s work explores her fascination with surfaces, textures and colours and the responses, both emotional and psychological, that these elements can provoke.  She uses collage, fabrics and stitch as well as lino and mono-printing, collagraph, drawing and painting, manipulating her materials to experiment and reveal in an intuitive way. In this process she is also exploring the connections between our exterior and interior worlds.

Inspiration is drawn from the land and seascapes of Australia, rock formations in Norway, beaches in Cornwall, and woods and lakes closer to home. Linda is aiming to evoke a memory of a place and time experienced, as well as opening the doors to new – as yet unexplored – vistas.

John’s photographic work is inspired by landscape and especially trees which he feels are imbued with both spiritual and visual qualities. Working intuitively when editing his photographs he is searching for structures, patterns and textures that reimagine the components of the landscape into new visual experiences.

He is also fascinated by the concept of symmetry which is found in so many forms of art and nature.  He endeavours to create work that has a meditative quality and allows the viewer the opportunity to discover hidden worlds. His artworks are constructed as photo collages as their composition is a result of a process of experimentation both with scale and the choice of paper to enhance the image.

All work in the exhibition is for sale.

Highgate Gallery open Tue-Fri 1-5; Sat 11-4; Sun 11-5.   Closed Mon.

Saint-Saëns: Requiem and Britten: choral works @ St Michael's Church
Mar 25 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

A detail frpm a painting of roses in a vase, some of their petals falling, and the text "Britten: Four choral works and Saint-Saëns: Requiem"

Chamber choir Voxcetera returns to St. Michael’s, Highgate, for a thrilling concert featuring Camille Saint-Saëns’ Requiem and four pieces by one of the best-loved and most distinctive composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten.

Saint-Saëns’ compelling and accessibly beautiful 1878 Requiem moves from quiet simplicity to unearthly fortissimi to shake you to the core. Originally scored for a vast orchestra, this version arranged for harp, strings and organ maintains Saint-Saëns’ heightened expression and heartfelt sincerity, but with the intimacy of chamber music. The performance features soprano Angela Henckel who has performed with notable ensembles all over the world, and in UK venues including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Martin’s-in-the Fields and Symphony Hall, Birmingham, as well as on Radio 3.

Britten wrote in 1945, “One of my chief aims is to try to restore to the musical setting of the English Language a brilliance, freedom and vitality that have been curiously rare since the death of Purcell”. That vitality is abundant in his extraordinary cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, by turns as mad and as beautiful as the religious poems by Christopher Smart from which Britten took the text. Other short works on the menu are the joyful Jubilate Deo, the dramatic Missa Brevis in D, and Festival Te Deum which sets ethereal Gregorian chant against a progression of shifting organ chords.

A bar will be open before the concert and during the interval.
