As part of the London Children’s Book Swap we will be doing free storytelling sessions in our foyer. Come along and listen to writer Lissa Evans read from popular children’s books, including Small Change for Stuart and Big Change for Stuart.
New writer Celia Purcell will read from her young teenage novel Jonathan’s Leap about a young boy dancer’s struggles and final route to stardom.
Also being read on the day will be Snail and the Whale, which is coming to Jacksons Lane as part of our family theatre season with Tall Stories.
Come along from 10am – 12noon for free storytelling.
Bring in your old books and swap them for favourite children’s stories from our book swap shelves in the foyer all week.
This year’s Children’s Book Fair on Saturday 28th February at HLSI welcomes special guest Clara Vulliamy (Martha & the Bunny Brothers, Small, Tom & Small, Lucky Wish Mouse, Dixie O’Day), following in the footsteps of previous guests including Alex T. Smith, Anthony Browne, Michael Rosen, Allan Ahlberg, Helen Oxenbury and, of course, Clara’s mother, Shirley Hughes.
There will be secondhand books for sale, children’s activities, home-made cakes and biscuits and Clara’s books will be sold by Muswell Hill Children’s Bookshop. Clara will be on stage at 11 to read from her books and to draw for us, and she’ll stay to sign copies of her books.
The Fair runs from 10 until 1 at Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution, 11 South Grove, Pond Square, N6 6BS.
The Post War Avant-Garde in Soviet Russia
Dr Elizaveta Butakova Kilgarriff, visiting lecturer at the Courtauld Institute, will talk about Socialist Realism. John Barkes, curator of Highgate Gallery’s current exhibition PAINTINGS FROM SOVIET RUSSIA 1950-1980, will share the platform giving his insights into the Soviet art education system.
Dr Kilgarriff is an academic focussing on the Russian post-war avant-garde. In 2015 she completed her thesis entitled ‘A-Ya Magazine: Soviet unofficial art between Moscow, Paris and New York, 1976-1986’ at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Based on this research, in 2014, she curated the exhibition ‘Paper Museums: Moscow Conceptualism in Transit’ at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton. She has been a visiting lecturer at the Courtauld, UCL and the Ruskin. In 2016, she co-taught the MA ‘Global Conceptualisms’ at the Courtauld Institute.

The Crossrail Project
Caroline Metcalf and Emily Tibbitts, Crossrail
Caroline Metcalf, project manager for Bond Street Station, and Emily Tibbitts, site manager for Tottenham Court Road station, will give an overview of the status of the project to build a new railway across London, with particular reference to their individual stations. In doing so they will describe some of the contemporary opportunities for women in engineering.
