‘Mindfulness’ is at the very heart of meditational practice and trains us to focus on the present moment. This allows us to gain insight into mental patterns that sometimes cause negative emotions. We also learn, through experience what it means to spend less time with our thoughts and spend more time in our bodies enjoying life. It can be practiced by people from all walks of life and is becoming more and more popular as a means of psychological treatment. There is now a strong evidence base demonstrating that it can be very beneficial for those experiencing depression and anxiety, as well as many other conditions. Mindfulness allows us to make friends with our thinking mind making us less vulnerable to negative mental activity. Such practice can bring about a deep sense of inner peace and a fresh acceptance of reality itself.
The Eight Sessions
This new and innovative group will take place over eight weekly sessions, each of 2-hours duration and covers the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation, applied theory and practice. Some aspects of CBT will also be used within the course syllabus where required to help group members to deal with dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviours. This specific group has been successfully taught in several London universities and also within the NHS. This group will help you to:
- improve your focus and concentration levels
- lower bodily stress and increase relaxation
- explore how your mind works
- explore how your mind habitually creates unhealthy thought processes and worry
- help you to prevent the arising of depressive moods before they spiral
- achieve a robust and healthy mind, accepting reality and the world around you
- work towards acceptance of unhealthy emotions
- achieve a deep sense of calm, patience and stillness
- grow and mature as a true human being and explore what it means to be ‘me’
This will be particularly helpful for those people experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, attention problems or any condition involving a fast-thinking anxious mind.

How better to meet random people in a pub then with a session of Bullshit Scrabble (make up the words, and justify them to your new friends) or over a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity (“a game for truly horrible people”)? Or maybe you fancy trying out the best game to ever emerge from Germany? That’s right, the ridiculous Camel Up.
And if that doesn’t get you going, we also have other lesser-known gems like Rapidough (dictionary with play dough), Story Dice (an imagination stimulator like no other) or the sublime Love Letter (think Tinder without smartphones or shallow hook-ups). For the traditionalists amongst you we also have a number of Argos-based stalwarts including Chess, Draughts, Backgammon, Risk, Monopoly, Game Of Life, Operation, Hungry Hippos, Guess Who, and many more.
Organised by local nutjob David Harrison – him and his merry men have been running a regression session in the Dungeons & Dragons Speakeasy out back for the last couple of months. If you want in on that as well drop him a line on David@kililive.com.

An exhibition of paintings by Lee Travis (1939–2012), 11-24 March 2016.
A fascination with plant form, its structural concept and the microscopic condition of flowers and plants drove local artist Lee Travis to create these extraordinary abstract images during his frequent visits to the Normandy countryside. For this body of late work, Travis developed a new and experimental way of working, using pressed flowers and foliage as the starting point for many of paintings in this exhibition.
Travis wrote of his work, “Painting for me has always been an absorbing and sometimes painful voyage of discovery… I use the word paint advisedly for what continues to excite me is to apply paint to a surface and attempt to create an honesty and reality regardless of the subject matter. It is, and I hope always will be, a marvellous exploration.”
Travis was born on the Isle of Man and trained as a textile designer at Salford College of Art. His freelance work included designs for Courtaulds, Sanderson and Crown, Liberty and Richard Allen as well as graphic designs for the BBC and major publishing houses.
After 15 years in the advertising industry as art and creative directors, Travis began working on his personal drawing and painting projects full time as well as lecturing. His output was prolific. He exhibited widely including the Poole Fine Art Gallery, Singer Friedlander Gallery (London 1991) and Hamilton Gallery (New York), Pond Square Gallery (1992) and the Atelier La Cuviniere (Normandy 2004). He received commissions from Time Life Magazine and the energy company Power Gen. His work was accepted by the Royal Academy for its Summer Exhibition (1992).
Travis began this cohesive body of large works in oil and acrylic on canvas in 2011 and it was his wish to exhibit at Highgate Gallery. Sadly, Lee died suddenly of a heart attack in 2012. We are grateful to his widow, artist, designer and costume maker Yvonne, for curating this exhibition with us.
Open Tuesday-Friday 13:00-17:00; Saturday 11:00-16:00; Sunday 11:00-17:00. Closed Monday

Highgate councillors hold a surgery at Jacksons Lane on the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings, and at the HLSI (Highgate Literary and Scientific Society, South Grove, Pond Square) on the 2nd and 4th Saturday mornings. There is no surgery on 5th Saturdays.
Councillors’ surgeries provide the opportunity for a constituent to meet one of his/her councillors face-to-face. The purpose is usually to discuss and hopefully to help resolve a local or personal issue in which Haringey council has or could have a role. Meeting at a surgery can be particularly useful when there are numerous documents relevant to the issue. Surgeries are normally held in the cafe or foyer area of Jacksons Lane theatre, but a private space is available if required. No booking is needed.
