8th March 2014 marks the tercentenary of the birth of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his first wife, Maria Barbara. To celebrate this event Highgate Choral Society will be performing a Magnificat by both father and son, the first dating from 1733 and the second from 1749.
Our programme also commemorates the tercentenary of Christoph Willibald Gluck. The New London Orchestra will begin the concert with the overture to his opera, Iphigenie en Aulide, and later play the Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Act 2 of Gluck’s most famous work, Orfeo ed Euridice.
