Bodegón y Jazz: watercolour and oil paintings by Cay Schröder

Cay Schröder lives with his wife in Camden, London but works mainly from his studio in the Canary Islands where the quality of light gives a directness to his work both in watercolour and in oils.

Though by definition he is a representational artist who enjoys using the skills and techniques of the Old Masters, he is still very much a modern painter of today. When studying the immortals da Vinci, Rembrandt, van Dyck and Velasquez, Cay wants to know how their creative processes worked, their colour palettes and methods.

Cay began his love of watercolour when he was studying Interior Design at Chelsea. He loves the unpredictability of the medium and the challenge to control the paint for this very English art form. He is inspired by the work of, amongst others, John Sell Cotman and William Russell Flint and, more recently, Rowland Hilder and David Curtis. His early career in graphics, working in black and white ink and later gouache, helps with the technique of mixing pigments to work in oils.

Cay’s absolute favourite artist is John Singer Sargent who dabbled with Impressionism – but never joined the group. Sargent’s sticking to his own way of seeing and then painting gave Cay his own methodology of looking carefully until he can “see” his subject, only then starting to draw or paint. He is currently delighted and inspired by the photorealists Richard Estes and Ralph Goings.

“Art can certainly shock, challenge or even disturb but it can also be an antidote to stress, creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere to enjoy. Visitors to my exhibition,” says Cay, “will find colourful still life, portraits of some of my musical heroes and maybe recognize some much loved landscapes. I hope to awaken a happy ‘feel good’ response of recognition and pleasure.”

Exhibition continues until 20 July.     Highgate Gallery open Tue-Fri 1-5; Sat 11-4; Sun 11-5. Closed Mon.

the rose and the bulbul (2 performances)
Jul 30 @ 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm

the rose and the bulbul

a promenade performance

TWO PERFORMANCES AT MIDDAY AND 3PM

Coke Studio artist Arieb Azhar joins dancers and musicians to celebrate the unity amidst diversity expressed through the symbols of the rose and the bulbul (nightingale).  The performance will take place on the Tea Lawn at Lauderdale House and Waterlow Park. The Rose and the Bulbul is co-produced by Kadam/Pulse and Luton Culture with the support of Grants for the Arts, Amal and Cockayne and London Communities Foundation.

The Rose and the Bulbul is a family-friendly performance with professional and community-based performers that taps into the love affair that humans have with creating gardens. It will be dedicated to the memory of MP Jo Cox: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us”.

The performance of dance, music and spoken word was inspired by the ideas that shaped the gardens at Stockwood Park, Luton. The title ‘Rose and Bulbul’ is derived from the significance of the rose as the symbol of beauty and perfection both in Persian literature and equally important in the English heritage as a Tudor emblem. The bulbul is the Indian equivalent of the nightingale which represents the woods and wilderness beyond the cultivated garden.

Storytellers, dancers and musicians will create an experience to bring alive the space of the garden and the audience will meet the Rose and the Bulbul, who come truly to understand their present only through a journey into each other’s past. Statues become dancers as the audiences are led in succession through a Mughal garden, a European walled garden and finally into open grounds, celebrating the synthesis of Islamic, Christian, Pagan and Hindu traditions. The Rose and the Bulbul is above all a story of love and acceptance.

The performance brings together the talent of outstanding young actor-writer Kamal Kaan (‘While the Water Weeps Next to the Water’, BBC Radio ‘Headline Ballads’ 2016); director Sita Thomas (Shakespearean scholar, Milkshake presenter and Bollywood dancer) and the popular choreographer-dancer Kali Chandrasegaram.

Theatre on the Tea Lawn: Twelfth Night @ Lauderdale House

theatre on the tea lawn

twelfth night by william shakespeare

After the great success of The Importance of Being Earnest in 2016, the award-winning Shooting Stars Theatre Company return to Lauderdale House with a fresh and modern interpretation of Twelfth Night.

Shooting Stars was formed in 2006 by Helen Crosse and quickly gained a reputation for producing high quality professional theatre.  They produce classic Shakespeare but bring it up to date and make it relevant to a modern audience with modern dress and in updated settings and ‘worlds’. Definately theatre for the whole family!

Shooting Star’s productions are always accessible, so even those not versed in the Bard’s comic play will be rolling with laughter. This is a play of mistaken identity and love triangles and takes its rightful place as one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays. Confused identity, cross-dressing and cross-garters are sure to make this an evening to remember!

Tips for our audience:

If it rains the ‘show will go on’ – we will only cancel in very extreme circumstances

There are no refunds but if we do have to abandon the show before the interval you will be offered a ticket for another night subject to availability

Bring something warm as even on a hot day the evenings can get chilly

The Café will be open for you to purchase food and drink on the evening but you are welcome to bring a picnic along with a blanket or chair to sit on. Chairs will be seated at the back of the Tea Lawn.

The Moeran Quartet @ Lauderdale House
Sep 5 @ 1:15 pm – 2:00 pm

The Moeran Quartet take their name from the composer Ernest John Moeran (1894 – 1950). Recently there has been a growing interest in the works of this most underrated of British composers. A student of John Ireland and great friend of Peter Warlock, he was known for his collection of Norfolk folk songs and his talent for the lyrical capturing of Britain and Ireland’s rural landscapes.

The four members of the quartet are experienced chamber musicians with a passion for the championing of British music. They lead diverse musical careers by playing regularly with orchestras such as the Hanover Band, Urban Soul Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Paul’s and Opera Holland Park. Between them they have studied at the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire and Royal College of Music.

Studying at this latter establishment is not the only link with the eponymous composer. James Greenfield, a cellist and past member of the Billroth Quartet, also attended the same boarding school, Uppingham; a school Moeran later returned to as a professor of music.

They look forward to bringing their passion for music to Lauderdale House where they begin a residency in 2017.

mosaic – london myriad ensemble

Following a very successful concert in February, London Composers Forum takes pride and delight in joining forces for a second time with the London Myriad Ensemble, to present a concert at Lauderdale House, showcasing the music of the ten Forum composers who featured in the February concert.

Since its conception as a professional chamber group in 2004, the London Myriad Ensemble has performed regularly both in the UK and internationally. As first prize International Competition winners in 2009, the ensemble performs a wide repertoire as a flexible ensemble with a wind quartet as its core which expands to quintet when required. ww.londonmyriad.com

With a keen interest in new music and in expanding the repertoire for woodwind chamber ensemble, the London Myriad Ensemble welcomes this second collaboration with London Composers Forum and the chance to explore the broad variety of exciting and accessible music which Forum composers have contributed.

Songs, violin and piano music by Fauré, Chopin, Duparc, Elgar, poetry by Baudelaire

Salon musical is a unique show of theatre and music where audience members escape the every-day and venture into a world of beautiful music and poetry as well as flirtation, gossip and intrigue. A cast of five young professional performers – two singers, an actor, a violinist and a pianist – all graduates from the top London music and drama conservatoires, play historical characters and weave together music and scripted dialogue. The show’s creation has involved academic research as well as professional direction and costume design.

Experience has shown that the shows bring alive the past in an informative yet entertaining way. The performers engage with the audience throughout the evening to create a relaxed, immersive and intimate social gathering.

Picture yourself as a guest at the home of celebrated 19th century singer, composer and pianist Pauline Viardot, being introduced to emerging composer, Gabriel Fauré, eminent and provocative poet Stéphane Mallarmé and their protégés. They will be performing their latest music and poetry and you will witness their spontaneous music making.

Jamaican Intuitives    13-26 October

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see a unique Jamaican branch of contemporary art which was first acknowledged post-independence and which continues to flourish. There are no pretty beach scenes; no ‘tourist’ art. The work is challenging and powerful.

Until Jamaican Independence in 1962, the larger part of Jamaica’s art establishment took only European and North American style art seriously. This was a legacy of colonialism. With Independence, the importance of the arts and of acknowledging and exhibiting Jamaican artists was recognised in helping to shape a national cultural identity.

It was the late Dr David Boxer, Director and Chief Curator of the National Gallery of Jamaica for over 35 years, who coined the word ‘Intuitive’ – now an official art term. He defined the context in which these remarkable artists’ accomplishments should be considered:

‘These artists paint and sculpt intuitively. They are not guided by fashion. Their vision is pure and sincere, untarnished by art theories and philosophies, principles and movements. They are, for the most part self-taught…. Their visions (and many of them are true visionaries) as released through paint or wood, are expressions of their individual relationships with the world around them – and the worlds within.’

All five artists in this show were born and (have) spent their lives in Jamaica. Their work has been part of major exhibitions at the National Gallery of Jamaica, and has been shown across the Caribbean, the US and Europe.

  • Christopher Harris was born in 1974. He was one of the fourteen selected exhibitors in the prestigious Young Talent V Competition at the National Gallery of Jamaica in 2010. Encouraged to draw from an early age by his father, a farmer and a portraitist, Christopher’s work connects to his Ashanti forefathers.
  • Kingsley Thomas was born in 1941. He worked in Kingston as a journalist for the now closed Jamaica Daily News before moving back home to rural Portland. A number of his lyrical paintings and sculptures refer to stories he covered as a journalist.
  • Leonard Daley 1930 – 2006. Partly surreal, partly realist, Daley’s images tap into Jamaica’s collective consciousness and history. In 1999, at the opening of Daley’s one-man show at the University of the West Indies, Dr David Boxer declared him to be ‘one of the truly great natural painters of the century.’ Daley was awarded the prestigious Bronze Musgrave Medal in 2002.
  • Evadney Cruickshank, born c1950. Evadney started painting after observing her then partner, the artist Sylvester Woods, at work. Her narrative paintings record daily life in her rural community – Pocomania services (an African-based religion), street dances, clearing up after hurricane damage. Her dry sense of humour infuses her work.
  • Birth ‘Ras Dizzy’ Livingstone c1932 – 2008. Ras Dizzy first came to public attention in the 1960s as a Rastafarian poet/philosopher selling his writings on the University of the West Indies campus. A remarkable colourist, he portrayed himself in his paintings as a prize-winning boxer, a judge, a horse race jockey. A poetic insight was written on the reverse of each work.

Opening Party on Sunday 15th October 2-5 pm featuring the Koromanti Mento Band. Mento is Jamaica’s folk music and the precursor to ska and reggae. The High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr Seth George Ramocan, will be guest of honour. Jamaican Intuitives is part of the official Jamaica55 celebrations.

A complementary event for the THIRTEEN exhibition

Susanne Mecklenburg (voice), William Hancox (piano), Gareth Davies (photography and videos)

IN between MUSIC and PHOTOGRAPHY is a complementary event for the THIRTEEN exhibition at Lauderdale House (4 to 27 October 2017), offering a visual and sound experience, weaving together photography and music to tell a tale. The programme reflects the artistic paths that Susanne Mecklenburg (voice) William Hancox (piano) and Gareth Davies (photography and video) have chosen in their collaboration which unite them in their exploration of eclectic musical choices and photographic techniques.

Musically there will be a combination of styles, composers, musical periods, geographical origins, rhythms, stories and lyrics, spanning from Händel toPiazzolla and including music by BrittenHolst and Bridge as well as contemporary Spanish and South American composers. In the accompanying photography and videos, you will find a diverse set of imagery using techniques such as slitscan and panoramas, matching the breadth and depth of the music and including Gareth’s work in the THIRTEEN exhibition.

Susanne Mecklenburg (soprano) regularly performs in solo concerts in the UK, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Her concerts are known to combine unusual styles, composers, musical periods, geographical origins, rhythms, stories and lyrics and are always motivated by the desire to tell a story. The searching for and discovering of new repertoire is one of the most enjoyable parts of creating such programmes and often leads to discovering rarely performed songs. For further details see www.susannemecklenburg.info

Gareth Davies (photography) lives and works in London and specialises in slitscan panoramic photography, enabling the capture of progress, repetition and time within a single integrated still image. Gareth is a member of the International Association of Panoramic Photographers, the Royal Photographic Society and London Independent Photography. Further information on www.tickpan.co.uk.

William Hancox (piano) has performed as a solo pianist, chamber musician and accompanist throughout the UK and abroad. He has played in all major concert halls in London and broadcast for Classic FM and the BBC. His teaching activities have included positions at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College of Music, as well as the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh.
