Classically trained painter Tamara Jovandic presents her new solo exhibition of expressive figurative and recent abstract paintings entitled BODY AND SOUL at Highgate Gallery 6-19 July 2018.
Jovandic’s work is influenced by the war, which tore through her home Sarajevo, Bosnia, former Yugoslavia, making her a refugee in 1992. Rich, deep colour and broad, tempestuous brush strokes sweep across the canvas, inspired by the Italian Baroque and Caravaggio’s colour palette and use of chiaroscuro. Working quickly from live models directly onto canvas, she describes the process of painting both as “a spiritual ritual” and “a physical battle”. Often autobiographical, her figurative works explore the female form, solitary eroticism, sacrifice and the isolation of a life in exile.
Her abstract works are freed from narrative and represent mute poems about trees and stone, inspired by Kenwood and Highgate Woods. On close viewing life figures are reflected in these mysterious landscapes.
The exhibition will feature “Passion” a prizewinning artwork from the London Biennale 2017 selected from the work of 120 artists across 40 nations.
Jovandic was born in Sarajevo. In 1991 she gained a BA Hons with Distinction in Fine Art from The Academy of Art in Sarajevo. Since moving to the UK in 1992 Jovandic has exhibited at the Mall Gallery, Cork St, The Royal College of Art and has taken part in over thirty group shows in the UK, Ireland, France and the USA as well as five solo exhibitions.

The Mansions of Highgate Ridge

This is the story the Great Mansions of the Highgate Ridge, and the visionaries who lived in them. Using seldom seen material from the HLSI archives, the lecture focuses on the lifestyles of the early owners of these houses and the pioneering reforms for which many of them fought. Now that London has because a location of choice for the global rich, the lecture considers what we can learn from the similarities and differences between the lifestyles of the new occupiers of these mansions and those who lived in them a hundred years ago.
Professor Richard Webber was one of the lead researchers on the recent ESRC project, on this topic. Professor Webber is Visiting Professor at University of Newcastle. He is the originator of the Acorn and Mosaic systems which classify people by the neighbourhood in which they live and is a long term resident of Highgate.
This July, the Moving Chamber Choir present a one-off concert at Lauderdale House featuring a programme of choral music from the USA.

We are now taking bookings for the Autumn Term for Painting with Watercolour and Acrylic.
This class is the perfect opportunity to learn the basics of both paint mediums; how to mix, blend and layer watercolour and how to apply acrylic. Explore how to make dynamic compositions that produce interesting paintings using still Life, photographs and sketches as inspiration. The cost for the entire term is £225.
Our art tutor, Sharon Finmark, lives in North London & studied at Central St. Martins School of Art. She has had several books published on painting & drawing – one on learning to draw was published in May 2016.

Rich, deep colour and broad, tempestuous brush strokes sweep across the canvas, inspired by the Italian Baroque and Caravaggio’s colour palette and use of chiaroscuro. Working quickly from live models directly onto canvas, she describes the process of painting both as “a spiritual ritual” and “a physical battle”. Often autobiographical, her figurative works explore the female form, solitary eroticism, sacrifice and the isolation of a life in exile.
Her abstract works are freed from narrative and represent mute poems about trees and stone, inspired by Kenwood and Highgate Woods. On close viewing life figures are reflected in these mysterious landscapes.
The exhibition will feature “Passion” a prizewinning artwork from the London Biennale 2017 selected from the work of 120 artists across 40 nations.
Jovandic was born in Sarajevo. In 1991 she gained a BA Hons with Distinction in Fine Art from The Academy of Art in Sarajevo. Since moving to the UK in 1992 Jovandic has exhibited at the Mall Gallery, Cork St, The Royal College of Art and has taken part in over thirty group shows in the UK, Ireland, France and the USA as well as five solo exhibitions.

Tamara Jovandic: BODY AND SOUL
Classically trained painter Tamara Jovandic presents her new solo exhibition of expressive figurative and recent abstract paintings entitled BODY AND SOUL at Highgate Gallery 6-19 July 2018.
Jovandic’s work is influenced by the war, which tore through her home Sarajevo, Bosnia, former Yugoslavia, making her a refugee in 1992.
