Tamara Jovandic: BODY AND SOUL

Classically trained painter Tamara Jovandic presents her new solo exhibition of expressive figurative and recent abstract paintings entitled BODY AND SOUL at Highgate Gallery 6-19 July 2018.

Jovandic’s work is influenced by the war, which tore through her home Sarajevo, Bosnia, former Yugoslavia, making her a refugee in 1992.  Rich, deep colour and broad, tempestuous brush strokes sweep across the canvas, inspired by the Italian Baroque and Caravaggio’s colour palette and use of chiaroscuro.  Working quickly from live models directly onto canvas, she describes the process of painting both as “a spiritual ritual” and “a physical battle”.  Often autobiographical, her figurative works explore the female form, solitary eroticism, sacrifice and the isolation of a life in exile.

Her abstract works are freed from narrative and represent mute poems about trees and stone, inspired by Kenwood and Highgate Woods.  On close viewing life figures are reflected in these mysterious landscapes.

The exhibition will feature “Passion” a prizewinning artwork from the London Biennale 2017 selected from the work of 120 artists across 40 nations.

Jovandic was born in Sarajevo.  In 1991 she gained a BA Hons with Distinction in Fine Art from The Academy of Art in Sarajevo.  Since moving to the UK in 1992 Jovandic has exhibited at the Mall Gallery, Cork St, The Royal College of Art and has taken part in over thirty group shows in the UK, Ireland, France and the USA as well as five solo exhibitions.

“I think very few people are completely normal really deep down in their private lives.”

Join us on Waterlow Park’s beautiful Tea Lawn this summer as Shooting Stars Theatre Company return for Lauderdale House’s Open Air Summer Season.

This year’s Theatre on the Tea Lawn performance is Private Lives, Noël Coward’s classic comedy of passion, romance, anger, laughter and love… The stage is set for a battle of the sexes when divorced couple, Amanda and Elyot, find themselves unwittingly thrown together again. Bring a picnic and enjoy the wit of one of England’s most famous playwrights whilst relaxing in the summer sunshine!

Sundial Sundays: The Popinjays & The Metatrons

Join us in pretty Waterlow Park for a summer BBQ plus a double bill of FREE music as two well-established indie acts perform live on the Tea Lawn…

Indie veterans, The Popinjays, return after a 21 year hiatus. After a critically acclaimed John Peel session, three albums on One Little Indian Records, a US College Radio hit “Vote Elvis”, and tours with They Might Be Giants, The Fatima Mansions, and the Kitchens of Distinction, The Pops called it a day in 1994. Since 2015 they have shared bills with The Darling Buds, The Wonder Stuff, and The Wedding Present. Back with their original set of 90s Indie Pop, Wendy, Polly and the drum machine are currently working on a special limited-edition, legacy release, again with OLI.

The Metatrons are an Indie band from Hitchin. Their second album, “Patterns of Chaos” has recently been featured on BBC6 Music and Sky TV.

Relax on the grass with a burger and a cold drink while you enjoy family-friendly live music as part of our ongoing Sundial Sundays season.

The Popinjays & The Metatrons performance will take place between 2.30 and 4.30pm on 12 August. All sessions are free to attend and open to everyone. See the full programme of Sundial Sunday performances here.
