The fascinating story of a top-drawer star of our entertainment heritage at Alexandra Palace is Dolly Shepherd ‘The Edwardian Lady Parachutist’. Elizabeth, nicknamed Dolly, became famous for jumping out of balloons and floating back to earth in front of crowds of admirers. She was a daring performer who made her first and last jumps from Alexandra Park, North London but had a successful career nationally and unlike many of her aerial pioneer friends survived accidents, going on to serve in both the First and Second World Wars.
Kirsten Forrest is Curatorial and Interpretations Manager at the Alexandra Palace and Park Charitable Trust.

Long term supporters of our Sunday lunchtime concerts may remember that among our very earliest performers were Sol Grimshaw and his jazz group – at that point just completing their stint at the Guildhall School of Music. Since then Sol has been a busy lad so we are delighted that he will be back with us at the end of September with a selection of lilting jazz tunes.

Francis Beckett’s new play Make England Great Again is set just after the Britons First Party wins its first ever general election victory, and its charismatic leader Max Moore enters 10 Downing Street.
It’s a comedy, but also a warning.

In The House Magazine, John McDonnell MP wrote of Vodka with Stalin: “As always with Francis’s work, you can’t fail to become emotionally close to the characters.”
His Tom Lehrer is Teaching Math and Doesn’t Want to Talk to You was “A glorious celebration of one of the brightest, wittiest and most principled satirists”.
