Organ Recital – Hamish Dustagheer @ St Joseph's Church
Feb 6 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Housed in this landmark church in an instrument of international importance. the grade 1 listed Hill organ of 1898 has been described as “a symphony orchestra”, “a cage of fire-breathing dragons” and “England’s answer to the great organ of Sydney Town Hall”. Although proudly dominating the west gallery, the unique instrument was not designed for this church, or for liturgical use; these recitals provide an opportunity to hear the organ fulfil its original role as a world-class recital instrument.

Garden Cemeteries @ Highgate Cemetery
Feb 11 @ 7:00 pm – Feb 12 @ 9:00 pm

As an introduction to our 175 anniversary series of talks Highgate Cemetery Trustee and Historian to The Royal Horticultural Society Dr Brent Elliot gives an introduction to the development of Victorian Garden Cemeteries.

When the movement to create large-scale nondenominational cemeteries arose in the nineteenth century there was no tradition of cemetery landscapes in this country for designers to follow. The first cemeteries copied the different styles of country house gardens, ranging from the informal park (Norwood) to the first signs of a return to formal design (Kensal Green and Brompton).

In the 1840s John Claudius Loudon called for cemeteries to be laid out on a grid pattern, planted with conifers; and his, the only book on cemetery design ever published in England, was available for local authorities to use after the Burials Acts of the early 1850s. Every large town or city in the country has a cemetery in the Loudon style.
In the later years of the century a reaction set in with a partial return to informal landscaping and the use of deciduous trees. The arrival of cremation at the century’s end reinforced the trend to informal landscaping and allowed the fashion for the Japanese garden to enter the world of the cemetery.

‘This Is A Chair’ Young Theatre Company Performance @ The Red Hedgehog
Feb 14 @ 8:00 pm – 8:45 pm

Performed by Bunbanters Young Theatre Company, a modern and abstract theatre production of Caryl Churchill’s short play ‘THIS IS A CHAIR’.

For an alternative experience this Valentine
s day, follow our Young Theatre Company through a series of surreal sketches, using ensemble based theatre. Our production takes us from the daily into the unspoken and abstract; highlighting societal issues hidden behind our everyday lives that many of us can ignore. A group of young people, who are possibly guiltier of this willful ignorance than many, explore with us the connectedness of the world and the things that may not directly affect us, the ‘Big Picture.

If youre looking for something different on Valentines 2014, the day to come together, watch what tears us apart. Gripping our audiences from the beginning, ensuring we have your attention and delivering this sharp and punchy play, well close the theatre doors and leave you on the street, with a closed mouth but an open mind.
