An opera by William Grant Still (1895-1978), with libretto by Langston Hughes (1902-1967)
“Troubled Island” (1949) tells the story of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, once a slave, then a rebel general and first Emperor of Haiti in the age of Napoleon. With dynamic scenes of heroism, love, betrayal and murder, as a commentary on the revolutionary life it parallels the better known tragedies of Spartacus and Emiliano Zapata.

Every Thursday the Friends of Waterlow Park (FOWP) in Highgate organise a volunteer session to restore and maintain places in the park that fall outside of the Camden maintenance contract. Amongst them are Sensory Border, the Lauderdale Terraces, the floral sundial, and the rose border. Everyone is welcome to take part. You don’t need gardening experience, tools or even gloves as these are all provided. We meet every Thursday at 10am at the Lauderdale Cafe and finish at about 1pm. It’s a great way of keeping fit and getting some fresh air and exercise while enjoying being around other people. We will finish for the year on the 20th December and reconvene in March. For further details go to the FOWP website: www.waterlowpark.org.uk or contact Patricia Walby, patriciawalby@gmail.com, Tel: 07710 312105.

Housed in this landmark church in an instrument of international importance. the grade 1 listed Hill organ of 1898 has been described as “a symphony orchestra”, “a cage of fire-breathing dragons” and “England’s answer to the great organ of Sydney Town Hall”. Although proudly dominating the west gallery, the unique instrument was not designed for this church, or for liturgical use; these recitals provide an opportunity to hear the organ fulfil its original role as a world-class recital instrument.

The Vespro della Beata Vergine, more usually known as the Vespers, is widely acknowledged to be one of the most impressive ‘calling cards’ in musical history. Dissatisfied with his work at the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga in Mantua, Monteverdi travelled to Rome in 1610 for an audience with Pope Paul V, possibly seeking a bursary for his son. He took with him his own newly-published Mass (Missa in illo tempore), dedicated to the pope; in the same volume was a setting of the main movements of the Vespers together with an additional setting of the Magnificat, an opening Toccata adapted from his earlier opera, Orfeo, and five ‘sacred concertos’ for various voices.
