Opera Loki presents La Traviata @ Upstairs at the Gatehouse
Sep 5 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Following from last year’s successful performance of Rossini’s ‘Cinderella’ at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in London’s Highgate, Opera Loki is staging a production of Verdi’s La Traviata. The performance marks the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth.

This year, Opera Loki sets a pocket production of this dramatic masterpiece in 1930s Paris. For years Flora has kept her beloved friends hidden away from the world and its troubles. The beautiful Violetta and her fellow Bright Young Things have kept the party rolling for years, sharing love affairs, endless nights, wealth and happiness. However, their world is changing; fascism is rising to the east, a handsome stranger has infiltrated their little world, and Violetta is dying. Clinging to the people and comfort around her, Violetta tries her best to stop time marching on. What happens when the party ends?”

Sung in English with a translation by Edmund Tracey.

Peter Freeth RA – ‘Previous Convictions’ 13-26 September 2013

Peter began printmaking at the Slade School in the 1950s and his passion for etching remains undiminished. This selection of favourite themes ranges widely, from Adam and Eve to the Archway Road, from the Grand Old Duke of York to Wall Street.

TALK – Friday 20 September 7.30pm for 8.00pm. ‘Previous Convictions – Fifty years in the acid bath’. Peter will explain a little of the practice and folklore of etching, will talk of his own technique and innovations, the importance of making mistakes, the benefits of learning from one’s students and the welcome intervention of chance in the creative process. He hopes to stimulate reactions to his chosen prints….more conversation than lecture.

LA fitness, Open Weekend charity partnership: ‘Walking With The Wounded’ @ LA fitness Highgate
Sep 16 @ 7:30 am – 9:00 pm

In aid of its newly chosen charity LA fitness is holding an in-club challenge to recreate the ‘Walking With The Wounded’ South Pole Expedition to raise money to help injured ex-servicemen and women adapt to life outside of the armed forces.  The challenge will  mirror the 16 days that the expedition is expected to last and will start on the 1st September across over 75 of its clubs. For the final weekend (14th-16th) LA fitness will be opening its doors for non-members to come and join in the fundraising efforts.

All those taking part will be invited to donate £3.35 to cover at least 1km on any gym equipment – from treadmills to steppers or even a South Pole themed studio class the company has created.  The proceeds will go to the charity which raises funds to support our wounded, injured and sick as they make the difficult transition from military to civilian employment.

Prince Harry, Patron of ‘Walking With The Wounded’ says:  “The vision behind ‘Walking With The Wounded’ – to reintegrate wounded servicemen and women successfully back into civilian life – recognises the unquenchable spirit and drive of these young people. It aims to harness their determination and energy, whilst adjusting their mind-set to face the numerous challenges that lie ahead. I urge everyone to support them”.
