Italian memorial sculpture of the 19th and early 20th centuries is among the most remarkable ever made, and yet remains surprisingly unknown to an English audience. Monuments by renowned contemporary artists developed from relatively conventional Neoclassicism to hyper-realistic sculptures charged with eroticism. A talk not to be missed especially if you are thinking of visiting some of the great Italian cemeteries.
Bob Freidus has been researching cemetery sculpture for almost 25 years. He was general editor of Italian Memorial Sculpture 1820-1940: A Legacy of Love published in 2004. This normally sells at £40 but copies will be available at £30 if you reserve them in advance.
Doors open at 7pm, and wine and nibbles will be served. The talk starts promptly at 7.30pm and will last about an hour.
Tickets are non-refundable but, as a courtesy to others, please let us know if you cannot attend.

Every Thursday the Friends of Waterlow Park (FOWP) in Highgate organise a volunteer session to restore and maintain places in the park that fall outside of the Camden maintenance contract. Amongst them are Sensory Border, the Lauderdale Terraces, the floral sundial, and the rose border. Everyone is welcome to take part. You don’t need gardening experience, tools or even gloves as these are all provided. We meet every Thursday at 10am at the Lauderdale Cafe and finish at about 1pm. It’s a great way of keeping fit and getting some fresh air and exercise while enjoying being around other people. We will finish for the year on the 20th December and reconvene in March. For further details go to the FOWP website: www.waterlowpark.org.uk or contact Patricia Walby, patriciawalby@gmail.com, Tel: 07710 312105.

Zoe Francis
with Robin Aspland (pno), Colin Oxley (gtr) & Andy Cleyndert (d.bs)
‘She’s honest and she swings’ according to New York bassist Neil Miner and has a ‘stunning beautiful voice’ in the view of other major US players. In London Zoe’s making a real impression at venues such as the 606, The Boisdale, The Pheasantry and the West End. For a young singer, her knowledge of the American Songbook is astonishing and we can honestly say that we have never heard such an enthralling programme. If you love great songs sung by a brilliant new artist, with an A-team band, don’t miss this one.

mirth, marvels and the mysterious
Winner of The Magic Circle Comedy Award, Ian Keable performs the favourite tricks of Charles Dickens, who, in addition to being one of the world’s greatest writers, was an expert conjuror. This humorous and mystifying show also reveals Dickens’s sceptical fascination in spiritualism and recreates some of the spooky practices of the Victorian psychics.

A Tribute to Michael Garrick
with Nette Robinson (vce) & The Lyric Ensemble (Tony Woods (saxes), Matt Ridley (d.bs) & Kate Williams (pno))
The Lyric Ensemble was the late Michael Garrick’s final creation, setting poems by Yeats and Shakespeare to music, as well as writing words to the compositions of the great Bill Evans. Claire Martin has described Nette Robinson as ‘a great vocalist I have just discovered’ and Tony Woods is one of our most brilliant saxophonists … so expect the unexpected, and remember the music of one of the most important post war UK musicians.

Highgate pub, The Bull (home of London Brewing Company), and the Grade 2* listed Lauderdale House arts and education centre are launching a brand new beer, ‘Nell Gwynn IPA’, at 7pm on Tuesday 4 June at Lauderdale House to raise money for Lauderdale Transformed – our project to preserve our heritage, transform our facilities and ensure our future sustainability.
Nell Gwynn IPA has been inspired by one of Lauderdale’s most colourful and infamous seventeenth century residents – Nell Gwynn, orange seller turned celebrity actress and successful mistress to Charles II. This American style IPA 5.0%, hopped using Columbus hops, also has the zest of 40 blood oranges in the fermentation vessel as a tribute to Nell.
A donation of 10p from every pint sold will go to Lauderdale Transformed. Dan Fox, the publican at The Bull says “The local community is at the heart of every good pub and we are delighted to be involved in fundraising for Lauderdale House, which has been at the heart of Highgate’s community for hundreds of years”
